Questions first
Would my '66 bug have originally been fitted with a 1300 engine?
Is a '62 Bug originally a 1200?
If I was to rebuild and freshen up either of these engines is it easy to tweak them for a little more performance?
Are the performance gains by modding a 1200 or 1300 worthwhile or would it be better to swap for a 1600?
If swapping for a 1600 are any other mods needed ie gearbox, brakes ?????
Thanks
Most people would opt out for the 1600 engine...
Yes 1962 beetles were 1200cc and the 1966 beetle had the 1300 engine...
I believe You would be better off going for a 1600 engine
larger capacity and still stock....
You could add twin carbs to a 1300 [if you can find the parts] but its still a 1300 engine...
1600 stock engine with electronic ignition will be a large improvement...
the 1600 TP also has the doghouse oil cooler to cool Your engine much better...

the 1200 and 1300s have very restricted breathing so its hard to "tweak" any extra horsepower from them...
without doing a lot of tweaking...
which just wouldn't be worth it...
lol

I think if you go to a 1600 you need to upgrade to disc brakes on the front. Just what I've heard, I don't know for sure.
pretty sure thats not essential....
get a good 1600, u be glad u did
wouldnt it be easier to fit the 1600 barrels and pistons etc on to the 1300 bottom end?? and as for twin carbs i had twin 28 pict on my 1300sp it did
go a lot better down low, but extra top end was about 10mph when they were in tune,i made the manifolds and linkages for these myself as finding them
was not easy
yar i would say 1600 you really should upgrade to disks at the front. Coukld probably get away with a 1500 SP tho if you wanted.
