kombi_kid - January 17th, 2009 at 08:13 AM

cheers
rhys

vw54 - January 17th, 2009 at 08:19 AM

most probally around 10 degrees

However you may have to adjust depending on whats done to the engine involved

But 10 is a good start point

greedy53 - January 17th, 2009 at 05:52 PM

7-10 and adjust from there

Joel - January 17th, 2009 at 08:25 PM

do above to get it fired up but chuck a timing light on and make sure it maxes out between 30-32*

555bug - January 18th, 2009 at 08:22 AM

as with Joel, just set the max to 30~32 and don't worry about the base setting.

depends what other mods have been carried out , basically the more mods the more advance it can handle however if it`s otherwise fairly stock motor 28 - 30 would be a better figure

maybe if you were to explain why the advise given is wrong rather than just say something is wrong then people would actually learn something.
the figures i quoted above came straight from one of the most respected vw engine builders in the world

DirkHedde - January 23rd, 2009 at 01:28 PM

from what i know the timing should be between 7.5 and 8.5 on the good fuel pretty basic stuff the comment about the more mods the more advance smell like crap to me too. that means that some motors ive seen out there must be advanced to maybe 87 degrees and beyond wow

hellbugged - January 23rd, 2009 at 03:35 PM

forget idle timing with 009's...........total advance at 32 degrees.............more advance on ANY motor and your asking for trouble, maybe a couple of degrees, but 40 deg and your gonna bust s%$t ;)

Brian - January 23rd, 2009 at 07:31 PM

mango
why quote someone elses info ,
avoid egg on your face

matberry - January 23rd, 2009 at 07:32 PM

Aw come on Daimo, I wanted to hear more about these tune up methods, more advance for more mods... Who is this best in the world tuner?

Brian - January 23rd, 2009 at 07:33 PM

I don't think the Bergs ever said that did they ?

matberry - January 23rd, 2009 at 07:36 PM

Berg's never said 28deg thats for sure. They only advanced up to 2deg for hemi heads.

grumble - January 23rd, 2009 at 08:20 PM

What about the spate of broken cranks from a few years ago due to excess advance,i am not sure where it came from but max advance was 30-32 degrees and over this was considered excessive.

mango - January 23rd, 2009 at 08:28 PM

ok well i guess i should have made my first post a little clearer , yes 32 degree would be max amount of advance on a heavily modded motor, 28 to 30 is regarded as a safer figure for a fairly stock motor is what i was trying to say . no egg on this face do a little research and you`ll find i`m right

grumble - January 23rd, 2009 at 08:34 PM

Mango you are right it's better to go for a lesser value than the maximun everytime, most times the difference could not be detected anyway. cheers les

not until you get into cylinder head temps, oil temps, fuel economy, engine mileage life ,DETONATION/pingking ....etc........under timing can harm just like too much

68AutoBug - January 23rd, 2009 at 11:31 PM

009s have to be timed at 28-32 degrees BTDC
at maximum advance with the engine running using a strobe type timing lamp..

this is about 40mm from TDC mark l-----------l
on Your pulley....

LEE

DirkHedde - February 3rd, 2009 at 01:32 PM

lee - does that mean that the 009 is timed at 28 deg if stock and 32 deg if a hot motor? at what rpm? Ive heard of people timing their engines at full advance around 4500rpm. what do you suggest for idle timing? i thought 7.5-8.5 was the go? isnt the full advance locked in with these distributors?

Joel - February 3rd, 2009 at 02:44 PM

Brazillian uh-oh-neins are real hit and miss when it comes to quality control
some over advance while alot under advance or come on to early/late

28-32* is the rough guideline to set max advance at
every engine is different and unfortunatley so are 009s

28 might be the most some take b4 pinging others can handle 32 no probs

u can set it 7.5 to get the engine fired up but shove a timing gun on it b4 driving and set it around the 30* mark
find the happy medium, no pinging on ur flavour fuel, but not doughy either

when i run N/A mine happily runs at 32 with premo fuel but my 009 is a german one, dads brazillian one is at 29 on the same fuel
