Paint The Beetle
Doolang - January 17th, 2009 at 06:18 PM

Hello fellow v dubers

What would be the best way to remove the paint on the beetle back to bare metal, orbital sander ? is so do i need the wet and dry sand pads , or will dry be ok.

I need to sand back to bare metal because i have some nice paint flakes that are already back to bare metal and i also have some paint bubble , i assume bog under neath.

Any help with how to get the bug back to bare metal would be appreciated.

Try a quick strip type disk on a grinder, looks like a very open grain round plastic scourer,
available from any good auto paint supplier.

one panel shop told me, they cover the car in paint stripper, then high pressure water blast outside

Thanks , ill give the strip disc a go and see how that comes up.

Paint stripper, then strip-it disc's. The reason for this is you can get the bulk of the colour off with the stripper so when you sand it your not getting as much dust flying around.

Whats a good paint stripper you would suggest

i`m doing this at the moment ,i used a strip-it disk as well as some flap discs on my grinder ,then finished it off with my orbital using 36 grit paper:)

I just use the stuff from Bunnings. It's a jelly like substance that you paint on. Its bloody expensive though.

tried the jelly stuff . the bug has had at least 7 coats of paint since it was bare metal. I can see Green Yellow Red Black BLue , Cream and brown.

How good should paint stipper work , i used a nice lather over the paint and its taking small bits off , how long should i leave the paint stripper for ?

a good tip is to score the paint work first so the paint stripper can penertrate the first couple of coats, also try to cover the paint stripper with a damp rag or newspaper, that seems to work. leave for an hour or so and see how you go.

so it begins

Doolang - January 20th, 2009 at 08:27 AM

and i have uncovered so much bog and more rust :-)

Dasdubber - January 20th, 2009 at 11:01 PM

Always the way! (ie finding more rust than what was visible to start with).

Having stripped cars previously by hand I can say I'd never do it again, we have all our cars blasted now as it was too time consuming and didn't give as good a result especially in seams, cracks, corners etc that you can't get a strip disc into.

Good luck - I love the safety goggles, mask, suit....and bare feet :)

yep blasting is the way to go for a better result, if not i used to use a 36 grit disc sander, (large) take most off and finnish it off with 80 grit

We ended up finishing the back end of the dub after 5 hours so it wasnt that bad. Bare feet :-) was ok easier to clean the blue paint from.
