i want to cover the holes in my front section tinware (the tinware in front of the pulley)
What dia are the holes? My tinware piece is in a garage which i currently can't get to, but i want to cut some bits up and have them ready to fit
over the holes.
Planning to go to the NEwcastle Dyno day and don't want any heating problems.
sorry, tried but mine are long gone.......
you could pop over to VVDS and grab one that doesn't have the holes?
get onto it tho, lots heat coming up through there!
i just wanna cover these ones - i have a selection of hole saws, just wanna use the right one to make up a plate to go over the hole.
Will source new tinware for the upgrade
so you gonna cover it from below with a couple of rivets and hi temp red to seal?, or are you wanting to weld in flush and smooth out.........?
i can go and measure up well enough to do it the first way.
where is everyone today?
he hee, i did some with tin can lids before, stayed nice and shiney against the black tinwear and had nice "accent" ridges built right in
I believe rivets always look rough as in this application so when doing our beetle a few years back i cut some nice neat round discs with some snips
that are approx 10mm bigger in dia than the holes in the tinware and cleaned the edges up on a sander ( you don't end up with the 6.5 mm hole in the
centre like a holesaw ) then disect the perimiter into thirds and cut again with snips a 10mm wide tab at each one of these marks and fold said tab
down .
With the 3 tabs all folded down (approx 6mm) place the disc over the hole from the top and then bend the tabs back flat from underneith and wulla a
nice neat factory looking infill
hi temp red to seal??
What i need to seal them or just cover?
I was just gonna cover from the bottom up. ITs not the nicest bit of tinware.
Ill do a proper job or buy a piece with no holes when i get the upgrade engine sorted.
couple small rivets, neatly lined up, yeah sealant just to do it air tight...........do the tin can lids, i dare ya!
high temp red leaves a nice red accent ring, well nice to me ..........just got baby asleep, i'll go and measure up now, back in a minute!
Cheers mate - tin lids...hmmm, a little too rat look for the green bug. Plus, i have sheet metal lying around at work, i'd have to look for a used tin can!
oh no, don't use scrap lids, buy new!..........i'm such a dag
oorkay, od of factory heater tube ducting is 55mm (but was there a rubber seal too??), ya got at least 88mm (if not up to 92mm ish)of area to work
with on the tinwear before interference or fouling from edge lip, curves etc.........
not terribly accurate measurements, but sounds like your ready to get on with the task at hand, depending wgat you have access to at your stash
location, might be able to grind it down on location........
if only you had asked last week before i cleaned up
WHERE IS EVERYONE TODAY?
give me 20 minute, i'll go to Nambucca and have a proper look at some, any excuse to cruise in the VW, back in 20mins.........Vroom VROOOM
damn missed out on your tin cans!
Cheers mate, much appreciated - that gives me heaps to go off. I haven't driven a 'long' trip yet, and if its a hot day i'd be best to make sure i
had this sorted.
Plenty on location, so grind is no problem.
Thanks again.
ps, you going to the dyno day?
dunno yet, maybe a couple of kombis with me too tho if i do........
oh no, bub is in the beetle, we're off to town for tin can shots!!!!
too funny, mission complete...........yeah holes 60mm, clearence for up to 90mm will get em covered, but not foul........
ha! Be good to meet you if you come down to Dyno day.
yeah, always nice to mingle with VW peoples..........be nice to shove "bugsmoney" in fifth gear and sit back for a few hours..............maybe Luke
in the EFI dual cab split and Uncle with 2L hotty bay kombi........if i come, i'll be changing venturies and jets to the biggens and shooting for
over 100HP, could probably live with the bigger ones daily now with the close ratios of the five speed anyhows
at home, guessing........
on a mission!!!.......she loves being able to see straight out the front at the oncoming traffic........go the beetle!
sexy tin lids, spwein i musta decided to paint over them at some stage........i would like to reccomend SPC 425g pineapple thins for this job
haha, thats funny - i like the way you can see the print.
yeah, i was always dissapointed i didn't turn that one around so the print was lined up better..........must have done that side first because the
other side was turned..........i had made an effort to line up the
rivets the same on both sides tho.......oh dear, always in a hurry when i was young!
have a good one
so how did ya go Mick?
Cut em up, quick and easy enough - just need to get to the tinware now!! Hopefully get the garage unlocked tonight or tomorrow night and then rivet on.
Couldn't you just put a small bar across the back same length as the diameter of the disk, drill a hole through the center of the disk and the bar to
take a small bolt and then simply clamp the disk into place over the hole. Well it sounds simple to me and reckon it'd look neater.
