cant get the alternator out of the housing. have got it all loose but the inlet manifold is in the way and can't get that out till I get rid of the
alt. stand which can't be moved till the alt. is gone catch 22. book just says to remove the fan belt and securing strap (actualy it says generator,
is there a difference for the process?) get rid of the thermostat (cant figure out how to do that) remove the screws holding the genie onto the
housing then just remove the assembly. The above is a simplified version of the steps required but it is generaly what it says to do.
This is all being done while the donor motor is sitting on the floor, stuffed if I know what will happen when I try to get the one out of the motor in
the buggy, also is there any difference between alternator and generator housings, will one just slot into the other?
thanks for any help
Don
undo the big nut on the fan in the back of motor and the four 10mm bolts on front housing and or just undo the gen stand off the motor and lift it out. Not that hard
Don, it's a while since I had one out but you are right they are tight,i think I ended up with everything unbolted and juggling the fan housing and manifold until it came out, going back was a little easier. Have you got room to pull the fan blades off and leave them in the housing? The fan housings interchange. Les
and poke your tongue out to the left.
No - the stands are different...
a generator will fit onto an alternator stand...
but not the other way round...
You could make an alternator stand out of a Generator stand by using a grinder... etc...
take the strap off...
the alternator/generator pulls out - to clear the fan..
-
undo the fan shroud - one screw each side..
and lift the fan shroud up slightly...
pull the generator out..
actually I have taken the alternator off still attached to the fan shroud..
practice on the spare engine...
its a bit fiddly with the engine in the car...
Lee
sorry the stands are different and don't forget the oil cooler duct screws and throttle tube Les
twin ports are alot harder cos theres even less room
ive still got a thermostat and the flaps installed so its not possible to jiggle the shroud around
hopefully this may help u out
heres how i pulled it off years back
lock 2 nut together on each of the alt stand studs and undo them out of the case
remove the 4 screws holding the fan to the shroud and the strap and then the whole lot can be removed sepratelty
i put all my engines toghether with bolts for the altenator stand now instead of studs
Bolts: good idea, Joel - will do that to my Kombi
Tops Joel, removing the stand is the only way I can see to get it out but getting it off the studs is my problem as there is bugger all stud left
above the base of the stand to get two nuts onto it, once out replacing them with bolts will be the go for sure. Hey Lee sorta thought that but it
would be impossible to get at the nut with the engine in the car anyway, thanks for the tip. Grumble, noted that the stands are different, obviously I
will need to change stands over once I get the thing outa there, thanks. Brilliant suggestion Ian but I'm left handed so that didn't work, I'll try
the other side, or maybe miss rose could come on over and help, with those little hands she might have better luck.
Don, if the studs are to short to lock nuts toghether how i got my back 2 out was just locking small vice grips on them turn abit, move vice
grips.....
painfully slow but it works
i didnt have enough room to lock 2 nuts together on the back 2 studs
