1969 oil leak question
jaymesobryen - March 6th, 2009 at 01:48 PM

i have a 69 beetle ,the mechanic that performed the inspection said
that there was too much oil leaking from the car and it appeared to be
caused by a problem with the "push rod tube" . question is can anyone
advise what is involved in having a mechanic fix the problem and also
an approx; price ,thank you.

this is probably a push rod tube seal...
there are 4 pushrod tubes under each side of the engine
each pushrod has a seal at each end...
the seals are not expensive...
Push rods are Not expensive... BUT

the engine needs to be removed and the head removed to replace the pushrod and seals... BUT

You can get special pushrods that are spring loaded
and can be installed in the Car...

This should take a VW mechanic maybe 1/4 of an hour to do... so it shouldn't be too costly...
to replace the push rod tube and two seals..
that are leaking...
Don't take it to any ordinary car mechanic...

where are You located....??

James,

I live in Port Macquarie. Probably the best VW person around here is Peter Richards at South West Rocks. His phone number is 65 650067.

What colour is your bug? I am wondering if I have seen it around. I have a Martini Olive coloured (babyshit green) 75L bug that I drive (with HOTONDO HOMES signage on it). I also have a 69 in bits in the garage (I am married). Send me a PM if you want to catch up.

jaymesobryen,

There is a mechanic named Brendan who drives a beetle & works at Hastings river brake & exhaust.(they do general mechanical repairs too) They are on Denham St. in Port, next to the bus depot. I get my rego checks done there, Brendan is a nice bloke and knows beetles.

If you decide to have a go at doing it yourself,(not a hard job if you use the expandable tubes) I'll pm you my phone no. and we might be able to make an afternoon of it one weekend.

Regards,

Matt.
