Can I run a Compu-fire electronic ignition replacement module in a 009 in my 6V type 3?

cheers

a 6 volt electronic ignition would really make a difference to a 6v engine..

If You can find one...

cheers

greedy53 - March 13th, 2009 at 07:35 AM

Greedy53, that sounds pretty poor man, gives me second thoughts on it.... but looks like i wont be getting it anyway.

cheers for the replies guys.

does anybody know if anyone makes a 6v module??

greedy53 - March 13th, 2009 at 01:22 PM

yer really poor and my mate his failed in the second month and another mate who had 1 sent with mine failed in 3 months and there not blody cheap

Just found out on the Samba that Petronix does a 6V system. will let u guys know how i go..

cheers

Steve were they definately compufire kits?

compufire is noramally pretty good and have a decent warranty to

theres kits like the accufire empi crap that looks indentical to compufire but have a spectacular fail rate

izac,

Here's a pertronix from cip1

http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=PER-1847-AN6

I'm sure there are others who sell them, especially in the states.

I've heard that the 6 volt ones don't cope very well with the drop in voltage to the coil caused by current draw from the starter motor. I reckon a "hard start" relay would sort that out. A lot of 6 volters have had one installed already.

Regards,

Matt

Thanks Matt that looks like what i want.

could you explain about the Hard start relay a bit more... what exactly is it?

cheers

greedy53 - March 13th, 2009 at 03:12 PM

yep they were compu crap still have them in the shed so i can yell at them every now and then

You run a wire from the main positive cable on the starter motor to a relay then to coil. It basically gives the coil a direct connection to battery while cranking.

I'll see if i can find a schematic for one.

Regards,

Matt.

izac,

Here is some info and a wiring diagram for hard start relay:

http://www.oldvolkshome.com/hardstart.pdf

I have been reading up and it seems the voltage drop affecting 6v electronic modules does not only happen during starting.

You have to have all your electrics in good condition or the engine can start to misfire or even cut out if voltage to coil drops. Good earths, clean contacts, good ignition switch etc.

One fix I came across, (was for beetle but probably the same for type III) is that the main power lead from battery doesn't go directly to the ignition circuit. It goes to the headlight switch then a jumper wire goes to ignition. People have had success with reversing these wires, but I would imagine you would need your head light circuit up to scratch if you did this, to avoid dim lights. (or should that be, dimmer lights?)

Regards,

Matt.

thanks for that Matt. I will give it a read.

Yeah it sounds like a fair bit of trouble... maybe its not worth it for a daily driver not sure i want dimmer lights as they already pretty much as good as candles ... but it would be handy.

cheers

Why not convert to 12volt????

izac - March 14th, 2009 at 06:15 PM

yeah ok man you can come over and do it for me...

they fail very quickly, if incorrect ignition coil is used...
resistance of coil between +/- , or 1 / 15 terminal must be 3 Ohms...also leaving ignition "on" for a while will do the same...

Yes, I always recommend a compufire high output coil too

If your paying, I'm in. :)

Boozo - March 22nd, 2009 at 11:36 PM

ive had a compufire in my engine for longer than ive had my engine, previous owner put it in, and its been hastle free.
But yes it does come down to using the right coil

i will never go back to points again, the bug and van both have electronic, even my 323 daily runabout has it. points are the worst most anoying bit on any old car IMO

is your car 6v? if so what coil are you using?
cheers
