Steering box
Sometimeman - March 14th, 2009 at 02:54 PM

Hi,
What is the considered opinion on putting grease into a 6 volter steering box that seems to be afflicted with a slight ooze. In the past I have used special cv joint grease in old Landrover swivel pin hubs, 'coz they always leaked, this works fine. My Autobooks manual says one must never put grease in an oil type steering box, but does not say why not !! . Has thinking changed since it was written in'73.
Your thoughts will be appreciated greatly.

While on the subject of leaks....is it an easy fix for a leak at the front of the gearbox nose?

Cheers Ian

Sometimeman,

Penrite make a proper steeringbox grease, you'll probably have to order it in.

Here is a link to a discussion over at DSK about penrite grease and the pros & cons of using grease in VW steering boxes.

Thanks Matt, That seems to be what I'm looking for as I feel the box is Ok except for the weep.
