Inlet manifold
Sometimeman - March 19th, 2009 at 07:29 PM

Hi again, Just a quick question re dual port inlet manifold having lots of tiny holes in the preheat tubes...........Does one buy a new one or is there a quick, cheap easy fix....I am disinclined to just blank them off as the previous owner did....
Cheers Ian

yeah if you live in a hot place it should be fine
if its old it wont be working anyways
other wise buy a new manifold about 100 bux

No Easy Fix...
You need to buy a Good used one...
Especially if you live in a Cold area [in Winter]
You don't say Your Location...??

If it does get cold in Your location, the carburetor can freeze solid... and then the engine can stop...

I had this problem last winter...

When the carburetor is too cold.. it will use heaps of Fuel too...

cheers

even in hot climates no preheat will still have condensation problems it just wont be as bad

its just a natural side effect due to the change of state from a liquid to vapour you get a refrigeration effect

i had a single weber years ago with an electric heater on it as the preheat had rotted off which worked really well
but even in summer if i switched it off the difference in economy and drivability was very noticable around town
highway running wasnt as bad

Hi guys. I guess Gippsland in winter van be a little cool sometimes. I am inclined to agree with the need for the preheaters to work anyway as often ice will form on the carby even on mild days.. I am much inclined at this stage to get a brand new manifold considering the effort I am putting into this motor.

It's not just the pre-heat tube.

Make sure your carb also has a hot air hose from the exhaust/heat-exchangers going into the air cleaner.

If you buy 2nd hand, make sure you blow thru the pre-heat pipe- they commonly block with soot & are a bitch to clean. If you CAN blow thru it, block one end with a hand & check it seals off. I put a 2nd hand one on (admittedly a decade ago!) & couldn't get an idle. The manifold had rusted thru into the pre-heat pipe. GEEEZ! It took me ages to work that one out!

Thanks very much for that tip Geodon.....I am sure I would not have thought of that.....I had a similar problem with the pre heat tubes on a Haflinger ages ago but it was easy to make new tubes as they just sat under the manifold.

Cheers Ian

A HAFLINGER!!!

Oh My God & Tin Fish!!

As a pimply youth on my way home from courting, I used to walk from the Armadale station along High St to Glen Iris
as I was too late for the last tram..

I would pause for a long while & look in the Haflinger shop window & ponder how anything so archiac could actually run.
