Hello again, I am putting my motor back together now and found that the 12 volt alternator was slightly canted when fitted to the fan housing..No worries, I adjusted the fit and gap and all is fine...However now the belt is barely firm enough on the the pulley without any shims at all....Can I get a smaller belt or should I try to pack up the alternator on its stand? Or is there something else I should do...I am not very keen on the serpentine belt as I am trying to keep everything looking as original as I can.

na just get another belt
someone here would be able to tell you the number and just go to repco
other wise a vw shop and tell the you want a belt for an alternator bug

the genny and alternator belts are 2 different sizes

give Vintage a call 02-9789-1777 they have both in stock and you can find the correct size

is yr alternator pully and origional VW one or is in some after market piece of junk Kepp the origional if its still good as there the best

Hi Dave, Not sure but I think at least the inner half is aftermarket 'coz it is chrome....But thanks for the advice...I agree a proper fitting belt is the answer.

i think you'll find that is the idea of not having any shims in the pulley. it becomes tighter without the shims. to loosen the belt a little try inserting a couple of shims until you get the right tension. from what i know the fan belt remained the same from 36hp right through to the late 1600s 6 or 12 v from what i have read.

Thanks for the advice guys..............I found that the old belt was an 11a900 so I tried an 11a880 which was too small....a 10a900 is just perfect, Bando make. It seems that different manufacturers brands can vary slightly.
So this is one more little problem overcome.

I agree with Lee. The only thing you should buy from repco/supercheap is oil. buy from vintage or classic, they know whats going on.
