I have a push button horn button in my dash that PO put in and works well... but I would like to switch it back to the horn ring...

When i pulled of the steering wheel this what I have, a black wire coming through the column



This is the push button that is currently wired up - it has a red and a black wire going to it that connects to the brown wire under the fuseboard.





How do i go about re wiring it?

There is always a reason for additional horn switch...it's either because of change of steering wheel, or broken continuity in that black cable through the column...
the horn is always connected to + 12V, the switch is connecting the - / earth / to it...

yeah theres probably a good reason for the push button. is there a way i get to the bottom of the steering column to see though...?

also, is that push button legal?

legal is if horn works....the way of switching is not specified...
the black cable should be terminated on the end of steering column,on the flexible rubber joint between column and the steering box...

This is obviously an early beetle.There are several systems, the most common is The black wire goes down the centre of the column,terminates on a spade terminal on the steering universal joint making contact through the bolts to the steering box to earth.On the end of the steering column is a spade terminal, a wire goes from this to the horn to complete the circuit. The legality of the button is a bit of a farce,whilst no method of operation is specified it is expected that the driver is able to operate a warning device without having to send out a search party for the button that activates it.ie in an emergency you do not have time to search for a switch which may be hidden under the dash,in the dash ,on the console or a multitude of other places.The obvious position for a horn buttton is where the manufacturer put it.

yeah thats right.. would be much more convenient on the wheel.
it is actually an early Type 3... sorry should have said that. but i think they are similar with the horn

best off replacing all the existing wiring and make sure all the contact surface points are clean
as per above the horn always has 12V on it and relys on the earth circuit to make the contact to operate and blow
