Hi again.
This is the ever challenging tale of my 65 Beetle. Recent work seems to have resolved the rear main leak but now there are problems with the
gearbox....
While the motor was out we replaced the seal on the input shaft of the gearbox and replaceed the coupler at the front....Put in new oil and decided
the very slight weep at the front of the box and sticky stuff in the pan were Ok at the moment..... Then I learnt in here that GL5 oil is not right
as it is too aggressive on soft metals so out it came and I found some Nulon SAE 80.GL4... Also replaced the rear gearbox mounts...So far so
good....
.After a 100 mile run there was quite a lot of oil under the clutch housing( 40 x 30cm patch on the drip tray) and a couple of drips at the front
(never dripped there before).....
When the filler plug was undone to see if I had over filled there was a sound as though they box had been pressurised, The box was not over
full.................
This is where I am at at the moment...Does anyone have a solution to this issue.
Many thanks Cheers Ian
sounds like the breather at the front of the box is clogged up if it was pressureised
Thanks Nicko. Will investigate tomorrow at the garage. Is it clear as to where the breather is.. I don't recall seeing it
The breather is up high you cannot see it,locate it by feel & a mirror, then clear it with a piece of wire. If the nose of the box is covered with crap it is a certainty this is blocked.
Hi again, Buggered if I can find the breather, is it just a kind of hole or does it protrude?. I can't find anything that appears right.
The nose was not particularly dirty so I dont think that would be the cause, unless the breather is hidden at the front.
Also whilst looking around we found a small piece of cast alloy, I think, about 5 x3 x1 mm sitting quietly in the bell housing...The feeling is it may
have come from inside the box and wrecked the seal on its way out. Next week will remove seal and try to decide if that was the case. The journey
continues.
Cheers Ian
The breather hole is just a small one about 3mm in diameter
in the nose cone flange, facing forward...up in the middle at the top.
If some one has used silicone to seal the nose cone gasket it is very common to find the hole blocled off inside.
Thanks Dangerous, I have discovered where the breather is, on a box in a paddock, Just have to locate it on my car. I would not have found it
by feel I am sure.
Thanks again
