hello,
thinking about up grading to a progressive weber 32/36. Has anyone got this set up? what do you think??
i ran 1 awhile ago, what size engine are you thinking? mine was a 1600 big bore
just standard 1600tp in 71 lowlight. i have fitted these to other cars and had a big improvement, hope to get the same out the van for economy and a bit more power !!
you'll get alot of mixed opinions about progressives on vws
they're not a bad carb once jetted right but truly are an absolute dog if theyre not
a single IDF or DCNF will give better results power wise but finding one at a good price is a mission on its own
where as the progressives being hated by most of the vw community go cheap when they do come up 2nd hand and even new arent real exy
Don't even bother , i played with one for many years on my 1835 manx and in a bus i could think of nothing worse than a blocked idle jet in a
progresive as the idle jet is against the fan shrowd which as you can imagine will be a mission to get to especially as you probabley don't have a
top engine bay hatch .
If it was me i'dd look for a pair of 36mm IDF's (Alfa Romeos had these stock ) as they will be sweet on a 1600 and give a good result to boot .

The other option is standard solex twin carbs off a type 3
agreed ^^
they take a bit reengineering to fit in a bug but i ran them and would have them over a set of K-dogs any day of the week
Thats right, with a little work and modification to the manifolds (I think I used 3 EH carburettor insulators to lift the height of the carbs and then manufactured linkages to suit. This worked well on my almost std 1600 in my old 55 bug
yea, don't do the 32/36. Even on the old fords they were a pain to get working properly. absolutely fine once they are working but a pain to get to
that stage.
Weber 34ICT's go well on a 1600 or twins from a T3 or T25 2L CU engine.
IMHO there's no reason to use a single IDF or DCNF as you'll get better performance and economy out of the twin carbs even if only single barrell
like the ICT's.
The weber is an okay carb, but if you have options, look elsewhere.
I'm happy with the one on the 1800 on my bay, but it seems like I'm a rare case.
THANKS FOR YOUR REPLIES AND ITS TAKEN ON BOARD. IM STILL GOING TO FIT THE CARB WHEN I GET A MANIFOLD BUT WILL DEFINATELY LOOK AT THE OTHER OPTIONS
DEPENDING ON HOW IT GOES. THERE REALLY IS A MIXED OPINION ON THIS SET UP!!
I WAS TOLD THAT FUEL ECONOMY IS BETTER ON THE 32/36 AND IMAGINE IT WOULD BE, I DONT EXPECT AS MUCH POWER AS THE TWIN SET UP BUT DEFINATELY EXPECT AN
IMPROVEMENT.
I DONT HAVE A PARTICULALY GOOD STANDARD SOLEX AND THE COST OF AN OVERHAUL IS NOT FAR OFF THE COST OF THE 32/36 SET UP FOR ME.
WILL KEEP YOU POSTED WHEN ITS FITTED.
P.S.WHY WOULD THE IDLE JET KEEP BLOCKING I HAVE HEARD THIS BEFORE BUT CANT SEE HOW.WITH FUEL FILTERS ETC
If you already have the carb and can get a manifold cheap then yea give it ago just make sure the manifold has preheat still attached and
functioning
as its progressive the jetting can be frustrating
best bet is to find someone with same size engine and start with similar jetting
syncronis (sp?) barrel carbs like IDFs DCNs etc are heaps easier to jet as the 2 throats are symetrical so you just jet them the same not like
progressives were both throats are different which is where the frustration starts
re the blocked idle jets, new fuel lines and a good metal EFI filter, not a POS plastic one are a good step to preventing it but an often overlooked
area is the air filter
people just dont associate air filters with blocked jets
most of the crap that blocks jets does come thro the fuel but also alot does come in thro the air cleaner too specially some of these poorly fitting
paper element pancake/ramflow filters alot of webers come with
ive been running one on my 1640cc beetle for the last 5years or so.
its good but a real pain in the arse to tune cos the adjustment screws face the fan shroud. still havent got round to jetting it fully put im pretty
happy with it for a daily driver
