Newly rebuilt engine- first one... noise questions...
orange_spitfire - June 4th, 2009 at 08:03 AM

Hey all,
I have a few questions that maybe someone can answer. I have just rebuilt my first aircooled engine; a 1641 with an Engle 110 cam. Everything else is standard with the exception of an electronic ignition, Weber ICT 34 carbs and a bugpack 4 to 1 exhaust. I just got it running and I'm hearing what sounds like noisy valve tappets in my motorcycle and I'm wondering if it could ber from the cam not being run in yet. Also, what is the idle supposed to be set at in order to time my engine properly?? I think I'm at 30 degrees after(or before?) TDC but without a tachometer, I can't be sure. Any info would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Rob

i think you will find it's just new stuff taking a bit of a wear in my first new motor when it fired up scared the crap out of me but a bit of running around fixed all witha reajustment after 200 miles
hope it helps
as for idel mine range from 900-1200 depending what motor im driving
you will find it a bit hard to do idel with out a rev counter but not impoeesble if you can get a timing light would be great

you want to set the timing max about 30 at 4000
or about 7.5 before at idle 850 -900

im guessing your probably running a 009 with those carbs and that cam

if so dont worry what its doing at idle
just time it with a strobe so its all in at 30-32* which is usually about 3000rpm

009s have advance curves all over the place, no 2 are the same so static timing them aside from initial start up is pointless

Thanks guys, I'll get it set as soon as I can get my hands on a tach.
