Suspenion choice

Just wondering if its better to have king pin suspension or ball joint front suspension on beach buggy for on-road and off-road use.

I was told better to use ball joint front end with IRS rear.

What year VW bettle do I get this combo from?

Cheers

The ball joint (BJ) front, IRS rear combination is most commonly found on 1500s and the semi automatic 1600s of the late 1960s.

If you intend to use the vehicle mainly for road use and non-abused off road use, the BJ/IRS comb is good.

The king pin/swing axle combo is good for the road and can take more abuse off road.

Either way, unless you intend to be really rough on the buggy off road it really doesn't matter which combo you use.

BJ fronts can have disc brakes as standard more often.

I recently bought a 1970, 1500 Beetle that has a BJ disc front and swing axle wide drums on the rear.

You really never know what suspension/brakes combo you will find until you look under the car.

I used a 1968 semi auto Beetle pan for the Manx SR as it came with the big disc brake BJ front and the wide drum brake IRS rear, as I wanted the best combo of braking and suspension for the road.
