Gday Everyone.
I know this question asked a lot but I just want to know what would be the most effective and cheapest way to give a 1600 that little bit extra.
I was thinking along the lines of Carbs and Bigger piston and rings to boost up to 1835. I just want to be able to 110 easily and have a bit of
torque for the hills and of course reliability.Does it destroy the reliability when you boost the stroke and bore size up? Also does anyone know of
this website? They seem to have quality parts at cheaper prices?

Also the carbs they have,

Don't know if you know this or not but, you are going to need to machine the case for bigger pistons and cylinders.
You can get slip in 87mm and 88mm kits but the cylinder walls are thin on these and are prone to overheating/warping.
92mm thinwall kits also have the same problem as they usually bolt into a case that has been opened up for 90.5mm.
Having said this I would recommend going with either 90.5 (1776) or 94 (1915)
yea take alot of what AJ says with a grain of salt, and forget the 1835 especially so in kombi
a good base 1776 or 1916 will be just as reliable as a stock engine if built and treated right
Yeah sounds good mate. Do you mean to keep the standard stroke?
Saying that I was thinking going for 1916.
They would obviously have plenty of punch.
Also would you recommend installing a High grind cam?
Yeh I'd say go with standard stroke atm.
I'm building a torquey 1915 at the moment. The milder the cam, the more torqey the engine is going to be.
Alot of great info on this thread:

How about the stock Cam? I was thnking about a fairly mild performance cam for 1.1 or 1.25 ratio rockers.
Go with the same cam I'm going with then: Engle w100.
Close to a stock cam and should pull like a truck in a 1915.
Heard its not wise to use stock cam in 1915

you can use a stock cam in a 1916 but its just abit of a waste as it wont take advantage of the increased capacity
cam choice will make or break an engine so first you need to decide what your doing carb/s wise
liek dont chuck in a mild cam like a w100 and expect a topend screamer cos you fitted duel twin throat webers
but also a w110 and small single throat twin carbs wont be the smoothest idling engine either
it takes the right combo to make a good all rounder
Thanks for the info everyone, that is exactly the information I was after. Thankyou!
From reading your info I came to the conclusion of 94mm Bore with standard stroke to give 1916. Dual 40mm Kadron Carbs and engle 100 Cam.
Is it worth stuffing around with the crankshaft?
Umm, its not really necessary with a engle 100 as you wont be revving it much past 5000.
Just make sure the standard one is in good nick. Wouldn't hurt to have it balanced either
Yeah its just that I was thinking I may as well replace the cam while I am going.Do it all once.
Does any one know much about Kadron Carbs?
Also can anyone tell if this 1600 is twin port from the picture I attached.
Cheers Joel.
lots of people know about kadrons around here, what would you like to know.
Also take out that fuel filter before it catches fire or someone on here shoots you - there isnt even a clamp on there :O craaaaaaaap!!!!!!!!
also, its a dual port, I cant tell you what capacity though. whats the code on the block, or what does it say on the side of the carb?
I haven't got it yet loll Ill fix it as soon as I can.
I just wanted to know if Kadrons were good and how much they improve the performance.
I also wanted to know if I can get them anywhere in Aus? Ive only found them on American sites.
well its got a 1600 intake manifold and carby
plus i doubt anyone would be silly enough to put anything smaller in a lowlight, altho mum and dads 72 camper they bought in europe in the mid 70s
blew up and mechanic found out it was a 1200 beetle engine
Kadrons are availble thro plenty of aus suppliers
they're a good base product carb and probably ideal for what your looking for
them on a 1916 with a W100 cam and good extractor system would be just the ticket for you
also whats holding you coil in place other than gods good humour?
Yes it a 1600.
Thanks Joel, yeah sounds great doesnt it .
What companies sell Kadron carbs?
I dont really like the sound of the Kadron linkage.
Rod Penrose might have some. You can prob pick some up second hand off someone for around $400-500.
I'm going with twin dual throat DCN's. They are as old as the hills but, I managed to pick some up for $507 off fleabay.
Yeah sounds good mate. I read somewhere that dual throats are better for dtreet performance engines.
Im sending Rod an email now.
