flasher unit

I think I need a new flasher unit.I have a 70 bug and it has a 4 terminal one.I am in brisbane, the bloke at southside vw said they were expensive. mick motors said they only had 3 terminal ones.Anybody know where I can get one cheap , I haven't really started looking for one so they may be easy to come by??

just checked mine and its a 3 prong one on a 74. try manx buggies or hardings. i think mine cost a little, over 15 under 30, but can't remember exactly.

i have had the same problem. you can buy new ones cheap but i had no end of trouble with it, so i had to get a 2nd hand one.
i think its only 1970 beetle with this type of flasher unit.
i think i still have the one i bought here or let me know if you want a good 2nd hand one as i will be able to get you one

try import advantage too, they can often have stuff like that as the flasher may have also been used on a vulvo, bmw etc

thanks for all your replies.how much for a good second hand one.i have been looking at a wiring circuit for a 71/72 kombie , it uses a 3 term flasher and the circuit looks the same as the 4 term unit except the wire to the indicator dash light comes from term 49a on the flasher unit.anybody know if this will work??

The 3 pin will work OK but the problem is the "tell-tale" on the dash. You could hook it up to one side but that would mean the other side won't give a dash signal when they work. If you know someone electrical, you may be able to get a diode & then connect the other side to the dash light & use the diode to block current going to the non turning side if you can work that out!. The diode only lets current go in 1 direction. Or you could set up 2 dash lights & have one for left turns & one for right.
Is there that much of a difference in price????

the telltale isn't a problem because the 70 bug only has one light in the dash for the indicator

That's not the problem, the wiring needs to be changed. The three-wire type has the dash indicator wired "upside-down," the simpler option is to connect it to the "out" terminal.
