I have a new mexibeetle engine with a standard carbie on it. I would like a little more power and thought about putting a new carbie on it. I am not
sure about going to twin carbies as they crowd the engine bay so much but does anyone know anything about these carbies from CIP1?

Would the twin carbies make a lot of difference, keeping in mind that I am not after a screamer, just a little more power?

Its just empi's version of the weber IDF. Apparently they aren't too bad although that is in twin carby setup. A single is going to be harder to tune and Unless you have good manifold heat its gunna run like a dog in the cold.

Granted $100 wont buy you what you want but for the $400 you get italian webers rebuilt and jetted to your requirements

The HPMX come with 28 vents so you are going to have to change them out to 32's for starters - another $100
on all the overseas forums ive heard nothing but bad news on them
mainly people complaing about the shitty material theyre made from as barry siad already

I am not sure. If you read Jakes replies, he makes changes to them before he uses them. Who knows what the changes are though? I am still not even
sure I will do anything though. I only drive this car about once a week. My big problem is, there is only about 3k on this motor so far so it is
probably still running in but it seems really underpowered compared to the 1600 engine in our other beetle. I have been very happy with its
performance and it has 180k on it since we built it 15 years ago. The new motor has some real hesitation when I put my foot on the accelerator
seriously so I have to back off so it doesn't bog down. I thought a new set of carbs may help.
All comments appreciated on how I may solve this feeling of disappointment with the new engine.

I haven't checked it for some time (mainly because it has driven so small a distance) so may need to check it again.
From what ive heard, twin kadrons are the go, cheap fuel economy and bit more power, i have a new mexican engine in my kombi i plan on putting a pair on
dont the new mexican beetles have catalytic converters?
No. Just normal peashooters on my engine.

I have used over 50 pair of HPMXs in the past two years.. Of those I have had TWO bad carbs that we could not update to function correctly.
I tested 20 sets of the USA made Webers in early 2008 and had a 70% failure rate from leaky castings, mis-drilled progression circuits and even had
one carb leak so badly that it almost started a fire in the Dyno cell.
The EMPI castings are very nice and with some subtle changes the carbs can be made to perform very well.. We do not use them out of the box and we do
have some changes that are necessary, but overall they are very solid units that are actually better than the "Real" thing today.
My close friend Art Thraen from Aircooled Engineering convinced me to try these units again after he was a consultant to Empi for making the carb
program better.. It took him 4 months to talk me into trying them again! Since then Art and I have offered valuable information to EMPI thats been
utilized to make the carbs better. We also do QA on the seats and offer information back for others to benefit from.
In the ever changing world of component quality we must remain open minded and can't ever become set in our ways.. The only thing that stays the same
is that everything changes.
This is no endorsement for EMPI or any of their products, it is a simple post stating that the current quality of the HPMX exceeds the current quality
of the IDF. Period.
I know of 3 sets that were purchase new
and all 3 of the sets had one of the carbies leak

A customer of mine recently asked me to check his HPMX carbs out as they were causing a few problems, both in tune and starting, nearly flatening his
(small) battery as the bowls were nearly empty depending on how long they were sitting between starts. They were purchased in 09 from CIP1, and upon
inspection the web between the bowl and throat was either cracked or pourous to the extent that fuel would constantly drain into the throat from under
the venturi's on three of the four chokes. We raplaced with a set of new Spanish Webers and all seems ok now.
Hope this helps, and is my only experience with the Empi carbs, I have been tuning and setting up Webers and EFI on a/c Volksies since the late
eighties.
