Recently, its been difficult to start my single port 1500 with 30PICT carb & 009 dissy. I would pump the pedal a few times, start the engine, it
starts for a second then die. I have to repeat this about 5 or 6 times. If I keep the revs steady, it will stall. Have to pump to keep it running.
Only does it when the engine is cold (& its been bloody freezing in Melb lately, 1 deg this morning). Never did this with the 28PICT. Is it the
carby? What do I need to do to it? Choke is disconnected

Um, your last comment probably hit the nail on the head!!
Can you get the choke working again? That would be my first guess.
Otherwise, in winter it's harder get the fuel to vaporise until things heat up a little, so everything needs to be in it's best tune to
work. It may be worth giving the carb and all the jets a good clean, as well as checking the ignition (points, plugs, timing, dwell etc).

I had the choke disconnected on the 28PICT for 7 years. Just could never get it adjusted (although I know how to do it & its simple). Car is due
for a service so I will put new plugs/points, check the leads, etc this weekend and see if it improves

So what do you do to yourself to fix it?. I assume a cup of coffee in the carby throat won't help
If you say you can adjust the choke but it doesn't work, what happens?
Does power reach the heating element? Does it heat up with power applied after a couple of minutes? Is the bimetalic strip broken? Does the choke
butterfly turn freely?
That's about all there is to the choke, and all should be easy to verify.

I reckon the auto choke on beetles are great,nice and adjustable and easy to fix,not like the crap on my wifes CROLLA fixed plenty of times never for long,my 1300sp is very tired has a 009 with module stock carb and new crappy brazilian inlet manifold,anyway 2 pumps on the throttle a little gas she kicks within 1-2 secs and idles straight away perfectly.

I don't like chokes. I like to warm my engine slowly so as not to sprain a tendon, or pull a muscle. the idea of revving the poor bastard after a
long night's sleep with oil dripping down off all the bearing surfaces just doesn't feel right. a few seconds of thought and stereo
adjustment while the idle slowly smooths out and warms up in the morning is good for my frantic head too.
auto chokes wear out engines. IMHO.
use your right foot gently for a bit. be nice. pat the steering wheel. flex your middle finger. prepare for roadwar. drool and stare vacantly at
people walking past. there a heaps of things to do while you wait for your old tech to do its thing.

On the weekend, I replaced the points, plugs and timed the whole thing. I also adjusted the choke. Starts first (or second) time and runs like a dream
now
