I noticed something yesterday with my fuel pump. There is a pin that runs from back to front about the middle of the pump body.
It was half hanging out the of the body so I tapped it back in and the morning it was half hanging out the other side.
It does not look like its kept in by cir-clips or anything like that. What does the pin do?
Will it fall all the way out?
How should I fix it?
Cheers, Brad.
thats the joy of these replacent brazillian pumps
not having circlips like the originals
i know a few people who have been caught out by the pins falling out
thats the pivot pin of the pushrod which operates the pump
so when it falls out the fuel pump stops working
i always keep the pins from old dead german pumps as they had the circlips so they can be swapped over but ive seen people peen the ends over or make
up wire retainer things
Cool thanks once again Joel
If I pull the pin completely out to file it for c-clips with the pump in the car will it slide back in no probs?
Or will I have to pull the pump and push rod out to align them?
you can put some light center punches on the alloy around the pin to spread the metal out so the pin wont push out anymore
brad it would be pretty tight to try and cut some groves in
from memory theres not much sticking out either side
ill have a dig around see if i can find a german pump i can raid the shaft and clips for you
doesnt seem like im gonna need to many VW fuel pumps anymore
what birch suggested works well too
ahh it makes sense now. I wondered why the pin thats in my pump sticks out 5mm each side when centered. I'd say the pin has fallen out before and a
PO has replaced it with some steel rod.
I will try punching the ends first, or grooving for clips. If I can't get it to work I will give you a bell Joel.
Thanks Guys, Brad.
dont punch it tooo hard as its only alloy only needs to be peened to stop the pin from migrating out
Another fix would be to put a dob of silicone on each side of the pin, although it may not look as neat.
