NOS 1200 german engine case... suggestions?
happyoldhippy - September 13th, 2009 at 09:35 PM

I have a genuine NOS German 1200 case and need some opinions... is it possible/wise to bore a 1200 case out to take 1600 cylinders? alternatively, If this is not recommended, I may be interested in swapping it for a new brazilian AS21 with a 69mm crank installed well. The old case is still sitting in its daggy old cardboard box and taking up space, but I need to make the right move for the future of my 1960 type 1. whaddyathink?

It was a regular thing done during the 60s! How late is the 1200 case? Has it got the cam slipper bearings? Is the case stamped with a number?

DH

PS. What area are you?

i dont think u can fit the 1600 barrels into the early case and you need the crank as well

I'll take some photos tonight (monday) and upload. I'm in Armidale NSW

They only need to be bored to suit the bigger cyls Dave. The later 60s case with the slipper bearings is always better than the earlier case without as we all know too well. The 69mm crank also goes straight in for the 1500/1600.

I had one of the later cases during the later 60s which I converted to a type 3 1600 which gave no problems for a 6 year period and near 100,000 miles. Others we converted had the high comp 1500S pistons which also worked well.

If it does not work out for you i'd love to buy it and build a 1200 engine.

or was it 1335 maby, someone will know

happyoldhippy - July 31st, 2010 at 08:23 PM

Since the last post, I have moved to Sydney and am now definitely more inclined to sell this case. If you're interested, send me a PM for more info... keep in mind that a Brazilian AS21 case is about a grand, so I would be looking for a tad more than that. So... if you're keen for a genuine German case that's never been used, maybe I could help.

Brian - July 31st, 2010 at 09:21 PM

bazilian AS 21 case has not been made in the last 10 years

AS41 is still available

happyoldhippy - August 1st, 2010 at 05:40 PM

yep, that's right..... an AS41 is at least US$650.00 too, so it also would be getting close to a grand by the time it's imported.
thanks for the tip-off!

Ha ha! Now you're sounding more like crappyoldcapitalist than happyoldhippy....

But for sure a NOS German 1200 case will be of interest to those who want to build 36 HP challenge engines.

Craig Torrens - August 1st, 2010 at 06:20 PM

I'm not sure its worth BIG dollars............its still just a 1200 case, and as soon as its used in a motor then its the same as any other..2nd hand !

P.s. You may want to spray it with WD40 to help protect where the bearing shells sit from corrosion.

Its a 40hp case, not a 36hp case.

My bad, it's *way* too powerful.

1500S - August 2nd, 2010 at 10:45 AM

The studs look too rusty to make it a usable item! How much do you want for it's scrap value!?

I know "happyoldhippy" and have for about 20 years.

He is the nicest guy and a genuine enthusiast. (i.e. he really loves VW's)

Keep your amazing comedy for another audience.

I think one of my earlier suggestions to Happyoldhippy was to bore it for 1600 pots as it's the later case with cam slippers. For a standard daily driver where it isn't going to be flogged the case will stand up ok, especially since it's new.

If he was closer, I'd bore it for free as also I'm a bit of a VW enthusiast and have been for near 50 years and like to help other fellow Veedubbers to enjoy without the generally associated high costs.

I think most would have read my post as "how much do you want for the case ?" so he can put that loot into an actual 1600 case if that is direction he wanted to take!:kiss:
