Am rebuilding the buggy
and the gearbox that was in it is a side plate, though it had a broken input shaft. The buggy also came with a 1600 kombi box that is supposed to be
out or a racer, but I suspect that I cant do a straight swap without cutting away some of the underbody protection.
So my question is - is a swing axle the same as a side plate, any advantages/ disadvantages.
For simplicity sake I was going to put a swinger in it, as they seem a bit easier to come by - assuming all fits - any advice appreciated, before I
waste all day to find out they wont fit.

Hi Peter, I think there might be some confusion with the termnology.
The trans in the picture appears to be a DUAL SIDE COVER IRS trans from a beetle or type 3.
A bus trans is a much better deal but you are correct, it is not a simple swap.(mounts, axles/cvs, and shift linkage)
The swing axle trans will bolt into the same mounts, but you will have to change the spring plates at the outboard ends.
All type one and three trans from 1961 onwards have side covers, whether they are swingaxle or IRS.
There are SINGLE SIDE COVER trans in type one and three from about mid 1972.
The side cover is the aluminium casting that bolts into the trans to close up the trans, once the differential is fitted.
This is an aftermarket one to help hold the diff in place.

The actual gearbox, had a broken input shaft, so does that render it useless - or can that be repaired without going crazy - just thinking as it came
out of the buggy it would be easiest - but I certainly dont want to recondition the thing - not initially anyhow.
I will try and source one and if not, then will look at installing the Kombi box.

Pretty straight forward job Peter.
Once the CV flanges are removed,(remove rubber caps and circlips),
the LHS side cover can be removed and the input shaft changed with a single circlip.
You may want to put new seals in the side covers, for the CV flanges whilst they are off.
Cool, sounds like I am about to be exposed to the world of gearboxes..
When I do get it apart where would I source the shaft and seals.
I will post some pic's, for the benefit of other novices like me..

Any VW shop should gave new seals and a used input shaft floating around.
