I would like to put better breathing heads and dual carbies on my ghia BUT I also want to keep the 2 little exhausts poking out the back.
If it comes to a choice between the 2, I'll keep the exhausts so would I be wasting my money with the heads and carbies?
Get yourself some IDF 36's and some worked 040 heads.
You could hook these up to a standard exhaust (although a header would be better)
Actually a Progressive with heater piipes hooked up to a stock exhaust is good.
Dont undeestimate the benefits of a stock exhaust!
They are the only ones that work heat risrers on a centre mount.
Also consider a custom exhaut=st that pokes out both holes. Dont cost that much to get one made up!
Wasting your money.:bounce
I'll 2nd the "your waisting your money" keep it stock if you want to keep the pee shooters
Rubbish! A magazine article in the late 70's published dyno tests on the stock exhaust vs the cheaper extractors - guess which one produced the
highest peak HP? Dual Solexes and 040 heads can produce a noticeable increase in performance (the baffles are usually left out of the
"peashooters," it sounds better anyway.)
Good extractors will produce better driveability and all-round performance, however.
BAS in germany got what you want,do you have what they want http://www.ahnendorp.com/beetle1.html
and Custom Speed Parts.

theres an old saying
If your going to do it do it right the first time.
In other words you are wasting time and money or WOFTAFM for short
If you leave the baffles out of the peashooters, then you have practically no muffling - would be surprised if it was still quiet enought o be legal
?
If I were you (and I'm not, but anyways) I would go the 32/36 DGAV
progressive webber. Makes a good power increase, excellent driveability and great fuel economy too.
I know I'm nit-picking, Doug. But the DGAV turns the wrong way (that's the G) and has a water-heated choke (that's the A.) The carb
we use is the DFEV, or the Holley 5200, which is a licensed copy of the same (but will need complete re-jetting in pretty much all stock
configurations.)
P.S. I'm not sure if the unbaffled exhaust would be legal by today's standards - it's about as loud as the old hotdog systems we used
to run (which passed EPA testing in about '85,) and WA cops didn't seem to bothered by it in an old VW... But this is the Wild West.
your wasting your time and money if you keep the stock exhaust.
changing the exhaust is the best horsepower for dollar gain you can make i reckon.
been there done it!
It WAS possible to find exhausts that use the basic VW design, with the two 'pea-shooter' exhausts. Back in the 1960s and 1970s there were
Italian Arbarth extractors that looked very similar to a stock exhaust externally, but had bigger pipes and different merging inside the muffler. Two
larger chrome pipes poked through the stock body cutouts. Made of unobtainium nowadays though. But you could make one if you were keen enough.
They were based on the almost identical design used on the 356 Porsche, whose exhaust is very VW-like in design. Porsche never saw fit to use US-style
extractors on their 356 coupes. They stuck with a (much improved) VW-style design all the way through - even on the sublime Carrera Arbarth 356 with
the twin-cam 2-litre 165hp flat four, so there's nothing wrong with that design. VW's pipes are just a bit small for performance.
The other exhaust was the Jack Brabham Lukey extractor sytem like i have fitted to my 56 Oval.
This has one dummy exhaust and one live exhaust tube both pea shooters. The pipe system goes up the inner guard past the axle and then back to the
stock outlet.
Good point Dave but i thought there was a Brabham/Lukey that had 2 live pea flared flutes.
Richard has a ceramic coated one on the wall - i will have a look at it.
Suppose to be a real good performing system. Suppose to sound SWEET to boot!
Origional Jack System only has one live pipe the other is dummy for Origionality.
I stand corrected.......
Always good to learn some more
Nit pick away.
I had heard that flat 4 was reproducing an abarth style extractor system ??????
