Hey, just driven my beetle from Sydney to Melbourne and have some pretty bad oil issues!
When I first set off I drove my car for 20 mins, fueled up and checked the tyre pressure, had a little look atthe dipstick and it was a little low! So
I topped it up. Just had the enigne serviced and tuned, and I didn't have an oil leak!
I travelled around 250km and stopped to give her a break and she decided to leak oil everywere from the main seal suspect area! The. It stopped after
leaking a good 50ml of the stuff. So I topped it up a bit more, checked the dipstick after running her for a few mins and a rest and it was inbetween
the too lines. I stopped a 100km more and again started peeing oil but looked at the dipstick an it says it's overfull. This happens until I got too
Albury and left it for the night, just a little drizzle underneath, but again dipstick full, took her round the block and then it said it was low
again. So topped it up, everytime I stopped after that it still leaked but the dipstick says full! Now I'm in Melbournr with only a tiny leak but
it's the dipstick says it's at the optimum level.....
Really bloody confused, a beetle noob.
Second thing if it is a main seal jobby what's the estimated cost, and does anyne know anyone in St kilda area or melbourne Vic who could look at
it!
Many thanks,
Danny
Could I be overfilling it?
I dunno what it i but this happened to mine the other day, i drove for 45 mis at around 95-100kms and then parked thought better check the oil and
dipstick was dry. Wiped it put it back in and then was near the top line. Now ive got oil in the engine bay so im thinking cooler seals.
Is there any leaks inside the engine bay
Nope, non at all! Good to here it's not just me!

I'll check the oil again tomorrow!
Yes I do wipe the dipstick, and I do have a breather!
Seems weird how the oil level fluctuates so badly!
It's defo near the back where the two little hinge things are behind the oil plate toward the front of the car!
if you overfill it can leak out
wait 5-10 min after its been running before you check to give the oil from the oil cooler (i think) time to settle otherwise it will look like its
under full...if you check straight away it will look under but if you top it up it will be over
and yeah..like lee said..wipe the stick clean and dip it again
to do a mainseal won't cost more than $10 if ya got a mate with a couple hrs :P or if ur handy with a couple simple tools. Even for a first go,
theres not much to really stuff up.
But anywho even the mechanics shouldn't cost ya much, if they are qualified with vw's and know what is involved. Mind you though, to find a
genuinely decent mechanic is hard. Had a guy wanting $80 labour for a 5 minute alternator swap (on another car)...
Scumbags bro!
