i changed one on my first beetle in 1993..so my memory is hazy! But Im pretty sure the quarter can stay in.

Someone else will probably say if not.

smokers window doesnt have to come out but you do need to take out the lower retaining bolt for it as the frame pins the regulator between it and the inner door skin

joel thanks buddy cant send you a message but i think i know which one the one thats a prick to get to aye it was just hard to wind up i sprayed of lithium grease it seems to be better but i wouldve preffered to lube it all up properly anyway thanks man i know your in nsw do you know if anyone that sells rebuild kits for gearboxes i reckon i need input bearing because its noisy while driving but when clutch is engaged it goes away sort of the olpposite of a thrust bering

its much cheaper to buy a used gearbox that was being driven and was OK before it was taken out..
A wrecker is not really going to know this usually...

Best to let the oil out of the gearbox and check after the oil has settled , if there are any gold brass bits or steel bits..

If there aren't any large pieces of steel, meaning a bearing has worn out... I suggest a couple of tubes of MOLYBOND
on top of new hypoid gearbox oil...

this may fix the noise problem and stop any further wear...
this is only my opinion...

cheers
