Whats the best way i can go about venting the breather of my 1600 3 rib kombi gearbox on the baja that will keep it water crossing and dust proof on the dirt?

Is there a good way i can do it without pulling the nose cone apart? off the shelf componentry?

small brass tubes or sumfin or some size vented at a filter element mounted up high?

Why do you vent a gear box??

What piston action is causing pressure??

ask the original vw engineers who installed it in my nose cone cover :P

i assume its to vent pressure where the air inside increases with temperature and expands when it warms up... putting less stress on seals

Venting is necessary because as it heats and cools, the air inside has to go somewhere and that is the problem with water crossings, it cools the trans quickly so it sucks in air as it cools, but if underwater still, in goes the water instead of air. You answered your own question though, a small tube (bit of 5mm vw steel fuel line works) can be glued to the trans nose cone into the og breather hole, but it does need to be drilled out, so therefore remove the nose cone, no big deal, just have a new gasket on hand. I would prefer to use a small tapped threaded fitting, and then some fuel hose run high with a fuel filter on the end. One important thing is as usual with breathers, is not to have a loop that will catch and hold fluid as any oil or such in there stops the venting action.

yeah usual 4WD practice is to pipe a hose to a high point on the chassis and install a U-shaped peice of metal pipe at the end, facing down, so water (in a creek crossing gone wrong!) can't run down the pipe and enter the gearbox
