vorsprungdurchtechnique - October 12th, 2009 at 08:51 PM

Hi

Does anyone have details on where to buy air bags and how to install them on an early 60's bug? Are they even legal?!

Thanks for the advice

Hi. Don't hold your breath about them being legal. Pretty much any suspension mods that require fabrication are illegal on post 1948 cars.

The legislation about suspension that they tried to put through banned them but it got knocked back. The best place to ask about legality would be on a minitruck (lowlux and lowdeo etc) forum. I have a few mates with airbagged minitrucks and they are sweet with legality

After digging around I have found some useful info for anyone interested in installing Airbags.

They are legal in NSW (at the moment) but additional parts not included in the kits are required, for example a device which disables the car from being lowered or raised whilst in motion. I believe there are a few other bits too.

CBB Volkswagen Performance said they would do the work and get an engineers certificate too, but it wont be cheap.

Airbags are completely illegal in Qld, not sure about other states.

Hope that helps

I think there is a place in newcastle that does a kit for a beetle.I think they are called "pro bag" or something like that(I'll have to check if thats right).
I know of a guy up here in brissy that got a kit of them to put in a 59 beetle.
And yes totally illegal up here.

It is called "pro bag".

They have moved to 10/8 Marshall Street Dapto, Wollongong 2530.
They did the suspension on the "skinhead" volks-rod.
