wierd clunking/flapping noise in third gear
ClockworkMonkey - October 28th, 2009 at 06:49 PM

I was just wondering if you guys might be able to help with my problem.

When i'm accelerating hard in third... and sometimes 4th, i hear this clanning/ flapping/ indescribeable noise. when i ease off the gas it quieten's down and when i;m cruising u can't hear it. any idea what it is? i thought it might be a loose plate or someting under the gear stick ( its has a short empi ) ... but i have no clue.. i doubt its serious .. was just curious - its detdracting from the great sound of the motor :)

What fuel are you using, how much advanced is the spark,is the engine pinging? Does the noise diminish when you ease the throttle? Or does the noise sound like it is in the tunnel? These are a few easy questions to ask yourself and eliminate them one by one, obviously we can't be sure as we haven't experienced the noise. But it does sound like preignition.

Preignition is your motor destroying itself

Get your motor tuned yesterday

Is it gear stick bush making the shift rod rattle. Can be a harsh noise, does it go away when you put load on the stick while its happening?

as per above try a few things hold the gear stick as see if noise still there

do you know what a pinging noise from the engine is ???

thats exactly what happens :) . as soon as i put a little pressre on the stick in a certain direction is stops

i just had it serviced and they said its running fine. its a single port 1500 ( i'm actually impressed at how hard this little thing goes when u put ur foot downv:)

you just need to replace the shift rod bushing

As you say you have just had it serviced and it was running fine it probably can if you can put up with the noise or accelerate more lightly.I would still have the other factors checked as well.
