first of all iv got a 68 beetle with swingaxle rear end bolted to a 1600tp engine, a few minors things have been annoying me lately, im having trouble getting back to second gear when down shifting, it crunches alot when your doing anything over 30ks, but not in any other gear, and for a while i have been getting a large shudder through the car if i let the clutch out in a bit of a hurry from a standstill like when getting into traffic, iv checked the gearbox mounts and they seem fine is there any other cause that will make this happen?
No expert here, but it sounds like a synchro is starting to go. 3 to 2 downshift is usually the first one to go. Gearbox will probably be fine for
years and years but the 3-2 change won't get better. Try going from 3 to neutral (wait a second...) then go into 2. No crunches?
As for the shudder, hopefully someone with more knowledge chimes in
make sure your shift is adjusted properly, had similar prob with my 61 with the crunching and was told by Klaaks it was a shift adjustment it needed
yeah i try to be slow about changing back but doesnt make much difference, im more worried about the shudder at the moment though
It will be the 2nd synchro, try double shuffling, this usually works, other than this a gearbox rebuild is needed. The shudder can be oil on the clutch or lack of bow in the bowden cable, this is easily adjusted by putting a shim on the end of the bowden cable, this is assuming the mountings are OK.
il check out the tube tomorrow, my car did have a rear seal replaced a while back but i didnt get to check the clutch out while the engine was out of the car
