Hi,
Whats a good air cleaner for the VW Beetle which allows for a good full flow of air? I've got a 1641cc engine - I put a Holden air filter on it but
it was restricting the air flow - so it was dying at idle. Using the oil bath cleaner now - but it seems to need something more.
ANd what air cleaner is this VW using? Looks good.

that bugs got a twin throat weber DCN on it, much different to a vw solex
the old oil baths are still the best for filtration
yeah they look ugly but they do the best job
you can get pancake filters from most vw suppliers but there abit noisier and can let water in the carb if u have a vented decklid
I have a stock one for a 1600 if your interested.... doesnt have the long nose on it though.

Hiya Blue,
You gotta get over the "looks" thing. That old ugly oil bath air filter is the best filtration for the Bug. Besides, did you realize that old ugly
thing has a built in velocity stack? That makes for better performance than one of those terminally cool chrome aftermarket jobs.
I have a PICT32 carb on a 1641 and run a late model genuine vW plastic housing Beetle air cleaner that uses the same filter element as a Mk1 Golf. I use a K&N filter cartridge. I had a mate weld a small bore tube to my inlet manifold so that I could connect up a vacuum line to operate the warm air inlet. Works for me and no oil to slosh around when you do handbreak turns (I used to motorkhana)

looks like a trumpet outlet... (but sucks in)
reduces energy losses of a flowing fluid compared to a 'square' entrance...
Plus increases air velocity by decreasing cross-sectional area.
Hi Mike
Hi I did make a velocity stack for My carburetor.
I then placed the PVC pipe piece approx 3 inches long
I did sit My chromed louvered air cleaner on top of the PVC which sat on the carbureter....
since then I have also read that the VW air cleaner does an excellent job... so I've fitted a 1971 air cleaner to my car

Hiya Lee,
What?
It's black!
Come now. We can't have that! Yes, the "1600" on the side is a nice touch. But really now! Black?
I was thinking of something in a purple. That would go nicely with the red, orange, and yellow.
And on a tech-note..........does the wax-pellet thermostat on your air filter work?
