Mk1 Golf questions
desh - November 4th, 2009 at 12:58 PM

Hello

I have a Mk1 Golf, it is stamped 5/76 on the radiator support panel, I have a few questions......

Is this an Australian made Golf or an Imported car?

Is there any way to know, if it is an Oz built car to determine its place in the 1976 production run, as it must be an early car?

I could not find any other ID tags under the bonnet,

Thoughts?

Thank you

mate you'd most likely be best hitting up the watercooled site,

As above, but I'm pretty sure all '76 Golfs were Australian assembled. It'd be an LS, right? German built Golfs didn't come in till '77 and were badged GLS. I think the plate would also say manufactured in West Germany or something similar. '76 was the first full year of the golf in Oz.

Nice choice of cars by the way - got any pics?

The bumpers are off a later model Golf, when I got it, it had the earlier chromed type bumpers but they were all rusted and dented, these were the only ones I could find locally at the wreckers.

Yeah a good set of chrome bumpers is worth a lot.

They're fun little cars to drive and there's not many around these days - an endangered species!

I recommend the watercooled forum as there's a good community of MK1ers there with plenty of knowledge and can be a good source of parts.

Cheers!

EDIT: Here's a coupla pics of mine just for the hell of it. Like yours but 2 door and manual, stamped 9/76.

Sounds like I need to get over there and ask some questions before I let it overheat and self destruct then.
