veegrub - November 4th, 2009 at 06:58 PM

hi everyone
the car has been going grouse after gearbox and engine sorted but today at idle the genny light was a little on
in the afternoon it got worse, i pulled out volt regulator and the points looked burnt
when and got another one put it on same thing
pulled the top brushes of genny couldnt get to bottom ones, i couldnt be stuffed pulling it off tonight, the top brushes looked good and seem to be touching armature
the charge rate is 12.34 steady is that about right for a 12volt 1500 beetle with stereo hazards and lights it went 12.00
if anyone has a suggestion i would love to hear from you

I would be suggesting the charge rate is 13.8V from memory

Certainly 12.34 V is too low

See if i can find something

gennys dont really charge much at idle which is why they were phased out for alternators but it should still be making slightly more than battery voltage at idle
taking it up to about 1500-2000rpm u should have atleast 13.5v

my first bug had a genny and i used to have to clean the regulator points up a couple of times through winter to keep the light off at idle
