Newbie - need help reconnecting engine wires
GaryFranks - November 4th, 2009 at 10:54 PM

Hi folks, I need some help bringing my bug back to life. It's a 71 superbug that was dissasembled by the previous owner. This is my first beetle, so I'm sorry if I sound dumb!

I've managed to get the engine back in, but I'm stumped by the wiring connections.
I presume the thick red/white wire goes to the regulator B+ terminal. But it has an eyelet connector which doesn't match the spade terminal on the regulator.

Is this right? Am I missing part of the harness, or should I just crimp a female spade on the end of the wire?

Also do the choke and fuel-cutoff connect straight to the coil?

Thanks in advance!

Gary,
One end of the thick red/white wire should be a ring (or eyelet) while the other should have a 9mm female connector if the voltage reg is stock.

Just make sure the power feed to the coil is the thick black wire, and you are correct, you can diasy chain the choke and idle solenoid together off the coil. When I re-did mine I ran power to a piggyback connector to the idle cutoff, and piggy backed a wire from there to the choke element connector.

I have a '71 as well and posted loads of pic's when I converted to alternator in the Tech Mods section.

I'm too lazy to search for the link:lol: .

Gary are you talking about the red/white wire that goes between the genny and the regulator?

cos that one goes to D+ not B+
which from memory had a screw terminal not spade

the B+ terminals one goes to the battery and the other goes into the loom heading to the fusebox

Thanks guys. I suspect I'm missing part of the wiring loom as there doesn't seem to be any 9mm female spade terminals on any of the wires.
I might have to check out a few engine close-up pics to see what it should look like!

The generator and the regulator seem to be connected properly (DF to DF, and D+ to D+)

Coming through the firewall on the left I have 5 wires:
- Thick red/white stripe with a ring (should go to B+ on generator?)
- Green wire with a ring
- Brown wire with a ring
- Black wire with a female spade (goes to coil + ?)
- Blue wire with missing terminal ( goes to regulator warning light terminal?)

Also there is a red/white wire hanging loose off the Battery + terminal. I presume this should come back through the firewall to the B+ on the regulator as well.

Anyway, thanks for the help so far!

blue wire in the engine bay is for the oil light
it goes to the sender below the dissy

the red/white hanging off the battery +ve goes across to the 9mm b+ terminal on the regulator

others are fine, black coil pos
green DF
and brown gen to reg earth

your reg is mounted under the backseat right? not in the enginebay?

The regulator is in the engine bay. As I bought this as a collection of parts I'm guessing the engine may not be the original!

It sounds like I need to extend the red/white from the battery out through the firewall to the regulator then.

Thanks for the help mate, I'll get busy with the toolbox this arvo!
