2276 big bore kit
hobbit - November 10th, 2009 at 07:39 AM
Hello all,
New to vw's. Just wondering which engine the 2276cc big bore kit fits to?
Cheers.

The 2276 will be arrived at with a combination of a stroker crank (longer stroke than the standard 69mm in a 1600cc Beetle engine) and larger pistons
(the big bore kit; larger than 85.5mm)
I think 2276 is 94mm bore by 84mm stroke? If so, lots of machining/modification required to build that engine

82mm stroke, 84mm is 2332 or something

Sorry, but it's not. Its 84 stroke with 94mm bore is a 2332.
See the following attachment for size calculator, about 3/4 down page.

The kit I've found is a 94 x 82 piston kit and you're right, there's a bit of machining required. The problem is not sure which engine would be a
good starting point, or the most capable. Has anyone done this mod before or seen it done? Will this kit fit on a 1600 as well as a 1800? Are the
bottom ends the same?
I'm new to these engine's so any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks..

I'm also fairly new to VW and have never pulled and engine apart yet, but I believe you just use a 1600 and have it machined out to accept the 94mm
piston barrels and you also need to have the case clearanced so as it can swing an 82mm stroke. I'm sure others will jump in and correct me if need
be and please do.
I have a 2180 which is 92mm x 82mm stoke and its just a normal Type 1 engine case, but I bought it complete.

VW Donks 101:
1800 bottom ends are Kombi (also known as Type 4 nad availabel as 1700, 1800 or 2-litre), 1600 is a beetle architecture engine (known as Type 1) which
is what the strokers/pistons we are talking about will fit.
For a big engine such as that, you should start with a 'late' (1971-ish onwards) Super Beetle case with this studs and dual pressure reliefs, or -
better - an aftermarket aluminium one that is much stronger than the standard magnesium alloy
But you are wading into big-buck ($10K+) engine builds here... Is that your intention?

Thanks to all for the good info. I guess now the only thing to do is ask if anyone knows of a type 1 engine for sale.
Cheers.
