Hi Folks, I'm having trouble re-installing the starter motor in my bug ('71).
It seems to mount up properly, and the bottom nut goes on fine.
The top bolt doesn't push through however. It looks like the head of the bolt is too big and jams up against the housing of the starter motor,
pushing the bolt out on an angle as it goes in.
Am I right in assuming the top bolt installs through the starter, and the nut then goes on in the engine bay?
I bought the car disassembled, so I'm not entirely sure that the starter motor is original. The part # is 0001-211-998-090, which doesn't seem to
match anything in the factory manual. Could this be a 6V starter?

Has the bolt head got a cut off section which locates on the starter flange to stop it turning when you are tightening the nut on the engine side.
Note that it isn't a hex head on it.

No, it's just a 17mm hex head bolt. I think I'll just grind one edge off to make it fit.
Thanks!

the top bolt on the starter has no hex on it ,there is a flat side and an oval side without the oval bit it won't go in far enough you could grind it off but the coprrect item would be best did you remove the starter
Thanks folks - all fixed. I just ground off one edge of the hex head.
The starter was already removed from the car when I bought it - came with a boot load of parts, so it's been a bit of a puzzle putting it all back
together again!
