Is he telling you that the Vacuum advance diaphragm is leaking? I also suggest that you move the fuel filter from its current position as it is a prime cause of a fuel fire, move it under the car.Cheers Les

His words were that its not holding vacuum. Siad i needed a new bit on the side of the carbie.

Fuell filter will be moved when i do the oil.

also in the backgound of the second pic there is a rubber hose off the side of the carb, why does it have a bolt in it?

Hi
Yes, fuel filter in the engine bay causes burnt out beetles...
I hope You carry a fire extinguisher just in case..

the vacuum advance can on the side with the small hose going up to the carburetor...
on the arm that goes into the distributor from the can will have a number on it... to identify it...
they are very expensive..

that's why many beetles have the el cheapo 009 distributor without any vacuum advance..

I have been using a Bosch 009 on my 1600 single port for 4 years without any problems...
I have however just bought a new SVDA 034 distributor from the USA to replace My 009 in the future...
I also have the pertronix ignition to replace the points..

You can buy the complete system - single vacuum dual advance distributors new... they are chinese copies, so I'm told but have been used without any problems..

You need to buy some workshop, owners, and operator manuals for your beetle so You can at least change the oil,
and maybe tune the ignition [points] and adjust the tappets...

You would need to buy tools also...

the late Gene Berg said "the best person to work on Your Volkswagen is You"

cheers

OKay, is it important that it is connected, or can i just undo the hose thingo from both and plug the hole in the carb?

And yeah i got a fire extinguisher

I also have a haynes manual for 1200 beetles but not 1600

Okay why is this thing on my manifold, what is it for?
It is soldered onto the neck of the manifold under the carb.
