"Bench" starting a Motor
German Bug - December 30th, 2009 at 08:33 PM

I have just finished rebuilding my motor and have put it back onto the gearbox mounted in my 71 Super's pan. I dont have any wiring and want to gt it started to check if all is OK.
The starter motor and solenoid are mounted as well.

Can anyone tell me the easiest way to start it?

Thanks

run a wire from the positive of the battery to the positive of the starter. it also helps to have a push button on the wire.

So I don't have to haveany wires to the coil. What about a ground?

yeah my bad wires to the coil as well. the ground should already go from the battery to the chasis

wouldnt it be easier to run a hot wire from battery to coil, and as the battery is connected to the starter on the positive side and it being a bare chassis to bridge the starter with a screw driver????

So let me just clarify please. Run a wire from +ve battery to the +ve on the coil. Then run a wire from +ve of battery to +ve on solenoid. Then just bridge the +ve and the -ve on the solenoid.

Correct?

A bit late but...the short version I hope

HD battery cable from battery +ve to starter solenoid M8 stud.
Coil + to same starter or battery post +ve whatever is easiest.
HD battery cable from chassis or starter ground to battery _ve.

I also use a warning light from the speedo and hook it between the oil press switch and coil +ve.

Use a small screwdriver to short from small terminal on the solenoid to the large battery +ve and crank away.

Plus you will need to hook up a fuel hose as well otherwise it will stop as soon as the fuel runs out of the carby.

might want to hook up idle cut off and electric choke if equipped.
