Fan shroud removal
Joels72Lowlight - January 1st, 2010 at 05:23 PM
Whats the go with removing the fan shroud? Is it just the twobolts either side and then unhook the generator from the stand?
Or is there other hidden difficulties?
Cheers Joel.

You need to remove the air discharge on the front of the shroud

Really... you've seen a thermostat on a car ??? I've pulled a lot of Volksy's apart and never seen one... to me they rank right up there with
unicorns, Nessie etc.

In a Beetle ideally need to remove the deck lid brackets to have "jiggle" clearance... not sure how you'll go with just opening the hatch in a
Kombi...

We had a stock VW engine on Lanock Motors' engine dyno, fine-tuning it for the 1963 Armstrong 500. I thought of trying a reading with the t'stat
'throttle' ring removed. Guess what?.......HP dropped! Back to 40HP with the ring back in place. Left it there for the race!
Never under-estimate the cleverness of 'factory' engineers.
Cheers, Greg

i must be special
i've got a working setup on one of mine
was lucky i found a NOS thermostat in my old bosses loft from his dealership days
its funny to see the way it still pulls close even when the cars hot and idleing
the dealerships were issued with bulletins saying they werent needed in aus conditions

Hey Joel did you have the lower sled tins and heaterboxes connected when using a thermostat/flaps?
I got a good second hand one from the states but it makes the engine run 10*C hotter for some reason. Maybe because I did not have the sled tins and
heaterboxes connected? It took a long time for the thermostat to open with out them. I tested the thermostat in hot water ( in the bracket)and it
opens up in about 10 seconds.I also tested that the flaps are fully open when the thermostat is at its peak.
I have since put the sled tins back on (just for air flow) and I think you could make a heat sheld to inclose the J tube side of the tins to keep the
heat around the thermostat?
Or maybe I will just leave it off, like the workshops suggest.
Hey fun bug, If I cant get the running temp down the thermostat is yours.
Joel - January 4th, 2010 at 04:26 PM
hey Brad,
if you have a functioning thermostat then you have to have the sleds and heaterboxes with hoses connected or if u have J-pipes you need those
industrial tins that seal off the open area
this is all so the 'stat sees the temp coming off the heads and barrels not cooled by road draft which is the problem in your case

heres some industrial tins
pretty easy to make yourself

Thanks mate, I thought that the missing tins and boxes would be the case. Those side bits for the tins seem pretty easy to make.
