If i have a 1600 kombi box and it has the guide thing over the spline in the centre does that make it an early box or late box? and what size clutch do i need? 200mm?

Ummm... isn't a Kombi 1600 box just a Kombi 1600 box.... as in no early or late ???

Pretty sure they used the same basic bits as a late beetle... pressure plate (200mm), clutch plate, throwout bearing etc.

oh ok, i don't know... I was at mick motors the other day and i told him what i had and he asked if it was a early or late 1600 kombi box? he said one has the guide and one doesn't. Problem is i can't remember what was what.

The one I have came out of an Kombi 1600 that was IRS, and it had the little sleeve/guide over the input shaft... same as an IRS Beetle.

Figure we'll find out one way or other when dangerous get's on - he'll know for sure !!!

yeah, I'm hoping to order my stage 1 kennedy clutch tonight from the states so i hope he gets on here soon

the sleeve just detemines which clutch kit u need
the trannys without sleeves need a pressure plate with the collar fitted and with a sleeve no collar

they ditched the collar and fitted sleeves starting in 71 with bugs and type3 so im guessing busses are the samewhich is proabbly where the early/late thing comes from

altho most clutch kits now are universal and have the collar which can be removed if used in trannys with sleeves

Joel is correct,
the guide tube normally indicates a "late" clutch.(even though 1971 was a long time ago).
type one engined normally have a 200mm diameter.

Luckily the Kennedy has a removable ring, as Joel said.
Eary trans use the ring and later ones it is removed easily.
