Points System Sucks
Oppressa - July 4th, 2003 at 11:09 AM

My point gap just keeps closing all the time. What options would I have to ditch the points system and go for something different that wouldn't give me problems?

bugboymatt - July 4th, 2003 at 11:15 AM

I fitted a petronix system and got rid of my points. Easy as to fit. I first used it back in the UK prolly 98 i think could have been earlier. i carn't remember the last time i had points in my bug ! When i got this bug here in oz i just brought my dizzy with me slapped it in and off i went ! I know they are on there 2nd gen version now !! I'll be getting one for the kombi i think........

Opressa (and others)
I have just gone through this crap - read my post on Crap 009

Anyway why it is closing down could be no grease on the spindle and it is wearing away, crap material on the rider thingy or just crap points.

I would suggest strongly putting in a Magfire. I bought mine from V Force for $110-ish (no quoteing me here ok)
These are in both Daisy and Blue and i never need to worry about points or timing again! :bounce

Oppressa - July 4th, 2003 at 11:42 AM

Will have a look at both of these systems. Thanks guys.

NigeType3 - July 4th, 2003 at 12:58 PM

As far as I now the Petronix 2 system is the only one with a protection curcuite so if you engine stalls while warming up and your not there to switch ignition of it won't burn out you electronic points.

They are also about $390 here in oz but with long waranty.
May be cheeper to buy from os.

If the petronix 2 cost $390 i would buy 3 of the old petronix from os with postage and pocket the change,or WHERES COSTA to organize a group buy.I got a 009 with hall sensor and module and electronic coil works great but to ambarassed to say how much,:o

I don't know the ins and outs of the workings of these things,

but how does it advance / retard for number 3 cylinder, or am I barking up the wrong tree (as per usual)

:o

Bizarre - July 5th, 2003 at 02:30 PM

you are barking up the wrong tree :D

These are for 009's or vac dizzies without the offset cam for #3.

In other words you can only use them on a dog (strange connection to barking) house shrouded motor.

Well - this is certainly the case in a Magfire situation. Would also apply to a Compufire/Petronic.
Not to sure if you can adjust a CDI set up?

vw54 - July 5th, 2003 at 04:46 PM

If you fit and adjust the points correctly in the first palce you should get 20K out of them with no problems.

I know i do on all my cars.

My Crane Cams Fireball CDI has been nothing short of flawless, I highly recommend them.

I've been running a Pertronix Ignitor module now for about 6 years & it's never been touched. Can't beat it.

I've been running a Compufire Ignition for 2 years on my 1600 with 009. No probs at all.
Not sure about the retard on No3 pretty sure that the 009 Compufire kit doesnt have this. Hasnt proved to be a prob for me so far.

Bizarre - July 6th, 2003 at 09:00 PM

Grey

You running a dog house??

Craig Torrens - July 6th, 2003 at 09:06 PM

009, points out of a Toyota, stock coil, works for me.:D, like Dave said, no probs with my cars either.:thumb

Grey 57 - July 6th, 2003 at 09:30 PM

No Blue , no dog house just standard fresh air. My motor runs pretty cool, oil temps never go over 85 to 90 deg C.
Touch wood , no problems so far.
