I recently purchased a set of Monroe GT Gas shocks weighing in at a mighty $550 for 4. Expensive but I wanted the best to finish my bug. The rear shocks lasted two weeks. They may just have been faulty which is fair enough, shit happens, but returning them is prooving to be tricky. So I purchased some KYB gas shocks from CIP for $50 each to tie me over and man I gotta say, they are soooo much better than the Monroe's. Just thought I'd share my experience, hoping that I can you save you some hassle and a lot of money if you're about to fit new shocks too.
Lucky you that they were under warranty.
About 10 years ago I put 4 new Monroe Gas shocks in the Bus and after 14 months, the LHF and the RHR had blown. They were out of warranty, so I had to
buy a whole new set, and I got Gabriel, and 10 years later they still seem to be doing what they should.
ive got monroes on the rear end of my bug and they have been there for years.
KYB gas GR2's for me
I've had no problems with Monroe GT Gas shocks on my Bug, the front ones were on for years before I got the car, and the new pair of rears were fine too.
Hi Everyone,
i also run KYB gas ajusts,i have tried koni's, bilstien, munroe's and KYB GR2's, i can purchase the KYB's from the states for half the price that
they cost here and one set that i have are on my beetle for 9 years with no issues,
the bilsteins lasted about 12 months and two of them leaked and they made the car ride like a dray.
KYB Gas a just for me
stocko cofap hydraulic (oils) can't be beat
old school soft ride and last for just about eva
Monroe shocks are just about the worst shock you can buy , Peddars are also very bad.
ive had monroe gas on the back of mine for 10 years this year
they're not the greatest out there but way better than all the brazillian crap like cofap/nankata etc
they are nowhere near as good as the konis on my other bug and one of those things i been meaning change for the last 5 or so years now
wanna replace them with another set of Konis or some billies, they're pretty impressive too, just abit pricey
just a follow up question about the kyb shocks:
at what point do you think it is necessary to switch from the standard front kyb gr2 to the shorter front kyb gr2? is there a shorter shock available
for the rear also? i plan on lowering my car a bit yet maintaining within legal limits.
Ive always had good luck with KYB as well, the old silver ones, which are black now. The white ones are far too hard for the front of a beetle, rear might be ok though.

thanks

Where is the best place and price to get Koni's from?
I have had two sets of bilstiens on a irs/ball joint and a swing axle link pin, never again, rough ride and had two of them leak, the KYB gas ajust that i have on my two cars now ride very well even with the 205/45/17 on the front and 235/45/17 on the rear, i have had a set on one car for 9 years with not a problem other that the paint

Does ride height adjust the part number i need? And can someone give me part numbers for Ball joint/ IRS... Wanting to go racing (thread below)
anyone know of good SOFT gas pressurised shocks for the front of a ball joint beetle..
Pedders comfort gas I thought were too hard..

may have to try them again..
Have a pair of oil Gabriel shocks for the rear [made in USA]

Konis Ftw! or if you cant afford koni go kyb
Ive got koni adjustables in my laser, also had them in my lincoln brilliant shockers.
Piggy is currently running kyb's that do their job rather nicely
tried to get kyb shocks from the USA but they said they wouldnt ship overseas, something about dangerous goods. Not sure if it was wolfsburg west or mid america motorworks, but seems no one else had this problem....
