Horn beeps when I turn a corner! So embarrassing HELP!
Burgo - January 29th, 2010 at 08:10 PM

Hey hey all!

SO.... My bloody car has decided to start honking whilst im turning corners... I have made sure the wiring is secure in the boss head and i also covered the housing in duct tape to make sure that the horn piece is not making contact with the metal housing and setting off the horn... AND YET IT STILL BEEPS!

I don't know what to do and am at the brink of selling the stupid "can-on-wheels"

Cheers,
Mike

Dude , If you take your steering wheel off you will see a metal contact that goes around about half way at the top. that is the earth conection that goes to the button to tunr on horn. So the contact is out of place or broken or bent or something but its earthing on something when you turn the wheel. I assume your running aftermarket sports steering wheel???

Anyway hope this helps , take you wheel off and check it out.

mine was doin this the other day after playing around with my beam. the steering shaft was just touching the steering tunnel or whatever its called. so i turned the steering box a lil, then problem fixed...hope this helps

I've had this happen on mine too, but it was fast right handers that did it... turned out to be the key swinging and touching the steering wheel boss, completing the ground circuit !!!

the horn is connected straight to the ignition [power+]
and a wire runs thru the center of the steering column

it sounds like that wire is shorting out...

or the contacts under the horn button can also cause problems... by shorting out..

they got rid of that idea in the early 70s
theres no moving wires in the steering columns in 70s bugs
the only one that does any moving is the wire inside the steering wheel hub itself from the copper ring upto horn button. this applyes to original 4 spoke wheels as well as sports ones

burgo u need to 1 check the wire in the hub/boss isnt touching as you turn and 2 check the air gap between the steering wheel and the switch cluster

mine did the same thing once when i first put a sports wheel on cept it was flashing the highbeam instead

air gap was too small

Thanks for the help all, And yes i am using an aftermarket sports wheel on a boss adapter. But i have taken the wheel off numerous times and adjusted the wires, and it still does it.

Yup - I'd done all the wire checking and stuff too with mine and not been able to find it.

Always used to always get a "tink beep" on a fast or sudden right hander.... it was only when I started looking for the "tink" sound that I figured it out (the tink was a key hitting the outside of the cast steering boss).

Easy fix tho - just took a few keys of the key ring, and problem solved.... so yeah, check it dude.

Ok I FINALLY FOUND THE PROBLEM!!! There is this little copper terminal type thing which was making contact with the boss head as i would turn it to a point, so all I had to do was move it like 1mm so it couldn't do that and problem solved......GAH!

Thanks again guys for ya help. This site has kept me sane haha

the brass contact on the wiper switch is supposed to touch the contact on the bottom of the boss
thats how the horn works.

Burgo - January 30th, 2010 at 02:40 PM

Yeah it was making contact with another lil peice as well which was setting it off.

I have the same tink sound.
I call it a GEE alarm (from G Force)
it works by measure the G force (you can fine tune by adding or removing keys off of keyrings)
