Another engine number question
mczaf666 - January 30th, 2010 at 08:14 AM

Ive recently purchased a 1965 beetle and was told prior to purchase that it had a 1600tp upgrade.
Ive just checked the engine number which is AB925854. On The Samba AB shows as a 1300. Another site shows AB as 1600 reconditioned cases.

I would like to have the 1600 rather than a 1300 but am only really trying to find out exactly what it is for future mods etc

Ive posted a pic of the motor so that hopefully someone can see any differences and can help me to establish what it is. I can take close ups and post if needed.

Hamish,
In Aus, an AB block generally starts life as a 1300 TP. Who knows what it is now. A giveaway may be the carb. The 1300 TP usually came with a 30 Pict something, 1600's with a 34 Pict 3. That is found on the fuel bowl side of the carb facing the coil.

The only real way to tell is to pull a head and measure the bore.

You have probly got a 1600 TP by the looks. it's probly been rebuilt to 1600cc from 1300cc as most are when there rebuilt. From Dylan

well its gotta 1600 carb and manifold on it so 99.9% chance its a 1600 now
1600 heads and cylinders bolt straight in and are cheaper than 1300 which are getting hard to get anywayz so most ppl opt the upgrade
