hey guys, what are the advantages/disadvantages of having solid gbox/engine mounts in a manx buggy????
cheers
matt
Disadvantages: Extra cost, time and labour to modify and fit. Noisy and harsh ride. Every vibration transferred to the chassis and your bum.
Advantages: Ummm ....
I am not a big fan of that sort of mount.
you need a weak point to break,
Like having a fuse in your car , it just blows a fuse so it dont burn out all you wires, uno wat I mean
just whack a chain around box or berg mounts.
First of all there is really 2 sorts
1) semi solid
2) solid
Mine is semi - you can see the poly mounts
The advantages are that it replaces the weak points of VW design
The front gear box mount on late IRS beetles is rubbish.
Once the rubber gives up you get a rocking back and forth movement of the gearbox
This gives a severe clunking noise and a rocking movement of the shift rod and gear shift.
My gear stick was moving 50mm back and forth. Unchecked the damage this would cause to the shift rod bush and bush holder is not good.
So the mount holds it all tight - to the detriminent of noise/harshness.
A bit like straight cut gears though. You either love or hate the noise
I dont mind the noise. No worse than my mates Lotus Elise.
There is a chalk and cheese difference in gear shifting
That part i REALLY love
New replacement front mounts are a total waste of money. It WILL fail again within 3 months
Similar is the rear mount between the horns.
Although not part of the (semi) solid mount - the late version is made of liquorice.
VW thought it would make for a smoother ride.
They are TOO soft
The one you can see in the pic is an early one with poly mounts.
Solid mounts just firms everything up more.
It REALLY stops the motor jumping round
It is more a race thing - especially the solid.
My car is a daily driver
I like the firm handling and precise shifting
i had a manx wit solid mounts, and rubber|metal straps its not like a bug with solid mounts because the noise doesnt get trapped inside a car, the manx is open so its not bad.
Unless you have an actual (rather than perceived) problem with standard mounts, why change? I destroyed solid 'US Name Brand' gearbox front mount in no time - gone back to rubber... we'll see how long that lasts...but have done big miles on the street with no dramas
I had the red mounts in my car, ripped them out first chance I got. Go rubber or soild, not halfway.
What was the problem with the poly ones??
Just gave the whole car a harsh feeling, hard to describe. I cant see the point in them really, if your going to have the harshness you may as well get the benefits of solid mounts. I only had them in because I needed mounts in a hurry and couldnt get decent rubber ones that weekend.
