Have purchased a 1500 gearbox and am trying to remove the wheel bearings to replace them. Have tried the Idiot manual method but the vicegrips slip. Anyone have any ideas? Don't have a puller that fits and the box and the whole assembly is out of the car
Whip down to your local Bunnings and get one of those new Black & Decker cordless hammers they work a treat.
You may have to remove the nuts on the axle-tube-flange,
and drive the whole housing away from the axle.
The fit within the axle tube,(of the bearing) is not all that tight,
it is the fit on the axle that is difficult to move.
I some times use the end grain on a block of hard wood,
and drive against the wood, near where the shocky mounts to the spring plate holes.
I have seen, but never tried, a puller made from head studs,
that had their ends ground so as to hook between the balls(OUCH!) and onto the inner race.
The threaded ends attach to a regular threaded puller, which pushes on the axle end..

If you don't need the old one
get a piece of steel and weld to the bearing. then you can twist it out
I've done this before :P
Thanks guys. I will use the cordless hammer and the advice by Dangerous. If that doesn't move them I will get a mate to weld on a piece of steel.Cheers
