Ah well I managed to get the width in the end. 280mm cv mounting face to cv mounting face if anyone needs to know for future reference.

Bus, and Beetle/type 1/3 are different.
I will try and find a measurment for each for you.
Not sure if verniers will fit over a trans so some fancy rule work may have to suffice.

I have 259mm for the type1/3 irs box and 278mm for the 1600 002 irs box

Awesome guys, thanks heaps. So theres basically 10mm per side difference between the two setups. When changing from a type 1 box to a bus box, do pple just put a 100mm inner cv on to match the drive flange? The extra width of it plus some length on the splines takes up the slack? Or do they change out both cv's and axle?

I have seen a few different combinations,
but when I use a bus box, I go for a shorter axle and use bus CVs on both ends of the axles.

The VW axle to use, is one from th LHS of a Automatic type 3.
I then counterbore the bus CV so it ill go onto the axle and still use a circlip.

These days it is prob just as easy to buy an off the shelf aftermarket axle.
From memory this length is between 15 5/8 and 16"...about 400mm seems like the number I recall.
The aftermarket axles have a lot of spline, so the bus CV does not need any modification to fit.
