hi, currently ive got a 1959 bettle that im restoring with my dad. well getting to the story we decided to overhaul the windscreen wiper motor with a 12v armature and grease the sleeves. while doing this we decided to rip the switch off and have a look, we were soon to realize it was probably one of the most rarest windscreen washer switches ever, i am of course talking about the manual hand pump switch that was in service in 1961 only in America BUT while i was searching around about this thing i came across a website that said in Australia there was an option to have these on 1959 bugs, i have also seen that in 1959 the bug came out with a washer but only in 62 did the spare tire system come out so i am led to guess that this is the one for my year..

so after that info i would love it if someone could help me tracking down the parts and some questions:
did this come out in 59?
does anyone have a setup like this?
does anyone know were to buy parts for this system?

help would greatly be appreciatted!

these pumps were in all 6 volt bugs, so that is up to 67'
very hard to find a good one, you will have to check swap meets
i used a aftermarket electric pump with a concealed switch

Yes people are confusing American-spec Beetles, which were made in Germany, with the Beetles sold in Australia (which were made in Melbourne).

ALL Australian 6-volt Beetles - up to the end of 1967 - used these old bellows switches. They had a single on-off electrical switch, and a pull-out push-in operation for the washers. They were NOT an option in Australian VWs, they all came that way from the factory until Australian manufacture ceased in 1968. As people have said, used ones are fairly common in Australia although you're unlikely to find an NOS one in a box.

Australian VWs did not get the pressure washer system until the 1968 big-bumper 12-volt model, which was fully imported and/or CKD assembled.

Another Australian Beetle thing - our 6-volt fuel gauges were electric, not cable-operated like the US-spec ones.

some one over the years has added a leter model switch to the car

they dont work even when you have a brand new one ( i have had several over the years )

sounds like the car is already been converted to 12 V so i would fit a micro switch to the pull mechanism of the existing switch and hook it up to a washer motor from super cheap to make the washers work properly

I should add that only the Deluxe Australian 6-volt Beetles had pull-push bellows switches. The Standard ('austerity') model, introduced in 1962, did not have ANY washers.

thanks, and aswell anyone else who have contributed i would like to say thanks. yeah mine was a "deluxe, CKD" so maybe it had some sort of washer but i think after hearing what the difference between us and aus beetles im pretty sure you guys must be correct, cheers

This fitting was also included in the Country Buggies which were all 6volt.
You can imagine none of these still exist in any Country Buggy around today.
