I've tried searching here, and not much to go on.

My horn would work intermittently, and sometimes go off in a turn.

I pulled the horn ring off and kept the hardware in the order of disassembly. I checked grounds, wiring and the horn itself, and all checked out OK.

I found the teflon washers under the 3 screws were worn quite thin and at the edges. I replaced the washers.

After reassembly, the horn doesn't work at all when the horn ring is pressed. When I short a screw driver between the horn ring and each screw individually, the horn blows. When I short the screw driver between the steering wheel nut and horn ring, the horn blows.

Anyone have any ideas? It's a '65 Beetle, stock standard, 6V.

Have the screws been screwed home? It seems the ring isn't contacting the surface of the steering wheel hub which generally indicates that there is too much clearance between the two.

Thanks for the reply. The screws were snugged up.

I pulled the horn ring back off, and found that the brass contact ring under the horn ring was put in wrong. The lip was facing up into the horn ring, instead of pointing down toward the contact ring in the steering wheel.

Problem solved.
