Oily engine bay?
Ollie - February 19th, 2010 at 05:52 PM

Hey guys, Ive noticed that my engine bay seems to get a lot of oil splattered around from somewhere and I don't know where it's comin from and whtger it's normal? I cleaned the bay and two days later there is a light layer on the inside of the deck lid and a few drops on the inside of the apron?

Is this common/ok? Cheers!

Usually from the oil filler.... Check there .... Maybe chuck up a pic of what it looks like- ie what breather stufff you have going on :)

I wish I could- I'm sitting in the cooler room at work so I can't- though my members ride section pictures should have it!

also check your pulley seal.

there isnt actually a pulley seal, all they have is an oil slinger cut into the pulley boss

looking at your engine bay pic its most likely that crazy pod filter breather install someone has put on it

why on earth they;ve done that is any ones guess
those kadron filters have a breather port in the RHS so unless its got 2 left side air cleaners best idea would be ditch that pod filter and hook it up as per stock

1835s are notorious for blow by
if that pod thing is too restrictive it will cos the pressure in the block to force oil passed the slinger and the pulley will throw it everywhere
its an OEM pulley so it should do a good job of keeping the oil in

After degreasing, go for a short drive then have a close look. Check the backside of the pulley for wetness, but you'll need to get out of the cold room first.

Out of the coldroom now!
Decided on getting away from the hustle and bustle of healthy burger making!

I'll check that Matt, and thanks for the tips Joel, I'll have a closer look tomorrow to see if I can assess where it's coming from.

Hi
it can be very common if the breather is restricted....

that hose coming off the oil filler...

just put the hose thru the tinware under the engine..

thats where the breather pipe was originally...

if the engine can't breathe thru that hose very easily...

OIL will be brown out the back of the crankshaft Pulley

as there is NO OIL Seal there....

just an oil slinger which works great when the hose is open unrestricted on a standard engine...

most old beetles have the engine bay covered in oil...

which has happened over the years... so it does happen..

but not every day... normally...
