is it possible (and bear with me i'll explain why i'd want to in a moment) to fit wasserboxer barrels and heads to a type one air cooled
case and somehow fit or weld water galleries around the barrels?
The reason is my wasserboxer project has hit a legal snag.
I cannot run aftermarket EFI on that motor due to it being built under ADR27a. a pre 76 case means I can do whatever I damn well please, so
aftermarket EFI and no pollution gear etc etc is all perfectly legal.
My only other option is to run it on LPG (erk...recipe for disaster on a turbo motor) or do things illegally.
or fit a WRX motor and engine management which I dont really want to do.
I'd be getting a bit of machine work done around the engine number area, but you didn't hear that from me!
Actually LPG and Turbo are not a bad combination, although lpg normally aspirated gives less bang per dose, It can be force induced at a higher
absolute comression rate than Petrol with out pinging, enough so that a higher power output can result using gas over petrol. then theres the economy
as you are not on boost a great deal of the time.
There are specialists that focus on such setups, I will try to find a contact for you if I can.
Cheers Tony
The whole issue of aftermarket ECU's being illegally on later cars is quite funny considering the size of the aftermarket ECU industry.
Technically it is not illegal. Fitting of an unapproved aftermarket ECU is illegal, because you are basically modifying the emmisions output of the
engine. Doing something to a later emissions regulated engine, that may increase emissions, is illegal.
However, you can prove that the ECU is not increasing the emissions, and then your ok. Currently this test is prohibitively expensive (about $10,000 I
think) and only about 1 RTA site in NSW does it. So you can assume not many people have their aftermarket ECU's approved.
The good thing is that new australian wide mod rules are being made (I have read some of a draft issue). The new rules will allow a much simpler
emissions test for aftermarket ECU's. The new test should be able to be performed at a heap more places, for a heap less. Probably around $1000.
Still alot though, and the rules keep getting delayed by silly southern states disagreeing.
It sounds like what you are proposing is possible. Maybe welding on some unprofessional looking plates and changes some numbers on a wasserboxer case
would be easier. Of course you didn't hear that from me.
Hi
The WBX was made in Europe with 10.5 comp and ran on leaded fuel, that's the motor I have in mine, it has a DJ prefix, as Dave
said..............

Thanks for the responses guys...
I have a 1.9L '83 case which will get the 2.1L crank (shhh! 2.0L is the max turbo for the weight LOL ) but it's the ADR issue, which is any motor made after '76 basically.
so if I could get a wasser case made pre 76 it wouldnt be a problem.
The engineer is no dummy (or he wouldnt be one!) so changing the engine prefix wouldnt work as there was no water cooled vee dub boxer pre
'76.
the only other option which I may well do, is run the '83 digijet setup, with an aftermarket "helper" system which would in fact do
everything but idle fuelling
yeah, i'm not keen on welding some nasty looking box sections on a type 1 case, but if it was the best alternative then i'll consider it.
Hi
What about fiting an aftermarket ECU in the VW ECU box?
1302Steve
Yes thats another option, but not exactly legal.
I'm wondering if the engineer will wonder why the circa '83 digijet is running a MAP sensor, oxygen sensor and two knock sensors
Hi
From the RTA site
"Emission standards for replacement engines 1972 and later model vehicles with substitute engines must meet the intent of the later of the
Australian
Design Rules applicable to either:"
Dont you have a 71 model?
1302Steve
it's a '72 model. but the motor is an '83, and the rules follow whichever is the newest.
so a '72 motor in an '83 car must meet '83 ADR's
a '83 motor in a '72 car must also meet '83 ADR's.
which is pretty much what it means with
"Emission standards for replacement engines 1972 and later model vehicles with substitute engines must meet the intent of the later of the
Australian
Design Rules applicable to either:"
but this is all good, as I really need some ideas here. Steve, packing the digijet box full of motec/autronic is definately the leading option I think!
As usual you heard nothing from me.
Good to see you still around Seoch.
Saw you at the nats but go lost in the crowd and couldn't find you again.
Well at least I though it was you.
hi
They also made the 1.9 WBX in carby form for some markets.
I havnt crossed this bridge yet with my engineer, I let you know what happens.
1302Steve
Bronze....yeah, i'm still around like a bad smell mate
Nahh wasnt me, I didnt make it to the nats
was this motor you are fitting to your beetle fuel injected originally?
